Default 04 wrx won't start

I drive an 04 wrx and last night driving normally i put it into second gear and it just cut out like a fuel cut or something.
I swapped the stock fuel pump back in because i couldn't hear my walbro 255 pump running. I know i have 3/4 of a tank but the gauge reads empty.
Should i get a new fuel pump relay?? anyone have any idea of what this might be???

Mods i know this is a double post but i always seem to get a quicker response posting it up in nesic, please let this fly. thanks

Sounds like you messed up the float thing when you put the stock pump back in, pull it back out and check if it's bent or stuck on something. Was the Walbro dead? Sometimes the clip doesn't seat all the way down, even though it feels like it does, you could always bench test it real quick to see if it's working.

ill pull the pump back out and check it. Im guessing it wasn't dead since i swapped the stock one in and that didn't work either (it worked fine when i took it out of the car). how can i bench test the walbro? its only about 5 months old..

Assuming that you have no CELs and that the car is turning over when you turn the key to start then you probably do have a fuel problem.

If I were a betting man I would say that the internal filter above the fuel pump has lost it's O ring. Remove the pump housing again, check the half plastic-half yellow zinc barrel above the pump. If you can see any O ring that has breached from it's groove your fuel pump is just working hard to pump fuel from the tank, back into the tank through the burst O ring.

We just saw this yesterday for the second time. Seems like a problem that we'll see more of.

Let us know if that helps.

DSG, the 04 has the fuel filter in the engine bay, not the tank. Is there an additional one in the tank on my car?

there is a filter in the tank, attached to the pump..

thanks guys, i got it running.
I disconnected all the connectors, relay, and fuel pump controller and also
made sure all my grounds were good. Put it back together and it turned rite over.
Must have been a loose connection or a bad ground.

This happened to my '06 WRX a few years back. I was in the middle of nowhere on a back road in Maine and it just shut off. Flagged down a truck and got a ride to a "repair shop" that got it to work again. The guy said he found an O ring from a snowmobile that fit. Don't know how long it lasted because I traded the car in a week later.
