axelback only. Catback requires rotating of the flange or something like that iirc.

Is it any louder to just do a muffler swap? I love the dual outlet stock mufflers that the older WRXs had and want a little bit more sound.

I would recommend searching the forum for wrx muffler chirp. Back When I had my 2005 RS I needed a WRX muffler for about a month between the loud crappy obnoxious setup I had for my first exhaust mod.. and the stromung setup with borla replicas I ended up getting.. Anyhow.. back then it was much more prevalent to have WRX mufflers from bug eyes swapped to the RS because there was only a year or two in age difference between the 04/ 05 RS and the WRX . It seems that lots of people reported the dual tipped WRX muffler making a chirping sound like a bird. Once the larger single tip WRX came out on the 05, the chirping went away.. the WRX axleback had basically zero impact on my car other then the larger silver tip looked nicer then the little RS one. The chirping was a result of usage on the RS..

My friend with a SpecR1 (Sonic Yellow 03 WRX) put his axleback on his sister's 07 2.5i with no problems. Just be sure to get a new gasket.

^ there will def be a chirp whether she has heard it or not yet. It is in the tip design.. can happen on any 02 -04 WRX axleback which is the twin tip years. Just thought I'd throw that out there to research.. most of the newer subaru crowd is prob not aware of such issues. Is it a big deal? that's up to the user..

Yes, I have a 04 wrx axleback that I had for a period of time and it chirped on start up, turn off and after revving the engine and idle falls down.
It was not that annoying, funny actually..... Most interesting though is that with my UEL setup and no cats, the 04 wrx muffler had more burble than the 07 wrx axleback I have on now. |

Thanks guys. It is for my girlfriend. She just picked up a 2.5i and I've got a couple WRX exhausts in my basement. She asked if I could make it a tiny bit louder.

I have an 04 wrx axelback and truthfully, it's not any louder nor do I feel a difference in power. If anything, it's asthetically pleasing.

ya you won't notice anything from a WRX muffler. The 04- 07 STi might make that very SLIGHT difference, but on a bone stock system even that wont do much.
removing a resonator with one of those mufflers esp the STI would increase the sound.. the best thing to make the car a bit louder is to remove the intake silencer / resonator... or get an intake.. but I'm not a fan of what it does to the tq and that's a whole different thread.. |

just do a full sti catback. im running that on my 06 obs and it's purrrrfecttt.... a little louder than stock and has a nice pur to it. yeah, i did have to cut the midsection and extend it about 3inchs but it's not as hard as people complain it to be.

![]() ![]() ![]() i only had it clamped that day, the next day i got it welded. i only did the sti catback cause i only bought it for $80 with the downpipe. |

Thanks! Many of the catbacks are 304SS, something I cannot work with. Clever kludge. The rust where your addition was made tells me that I could weld an extension to the pipe at some point.
My daughter and I work on her 2006 Impreza together. I am researching 'inexpensive' exhaust modifications. Making the car sound better is at the top of the list. |

if you can get a cheap wrx or sti midsection extending the pipe doesnt take much effort. all you got to do after is figure out what kind of axle back you want.

this is what i did with a 05 wrx catback on my 07 2.5i, it made it a little louder but nothing to noticable, i got the catback for free and cost like 30-40 bucks to have a shop weld in the extension piece in place of the chamber, i also prefer how the tip looks
