Default Shaking at idle and running lean - was just tuned yesterday..

I just finished my build and had it tuned yesterday. All seemed well until this afternoon.

First the mod list:
*Rallispec street series shortblock
*Kelford 272 cams with Ferrea valve train
*Deatschwerks 850cc injectors
*ATP3076r IWG Turbo
*APS DR525 FMIC
*APS hard inlet
*KSTech Weldless TGV Kit
*Grimmspeed A/O Separator
*KsTech 73mm CAI - matched for APS FMIC
*Cobb Catless TBE
*Cobb Lightweight Crank Pulley
*Ported Stock headers w/ Stock Xpipe and Perrin UP
*Walbro 255 Fuel pump
*NGK Copper Spark Plugs LFRGA-11 gapped to .028"
*Hallman MBC

The car was just tuned yesterday at EFI logics on 93oct and ran awesome the 350mile drive home. Then, I took the car out this afternoon for a ride and only boosted once on the way to my destination. Then on the ride home, I went WOT twice and all was well. Then about 1/2 mile from my exit ramp on the highway I gave it a little gas to go from a 55mph zone to a 65mph zone and then the car started to shake.

My wideband read around 10, which it is supposed to at WOT and my boost was at about 20psi. These are the normal numbers since I was tuned at EFI and even double checked with Chris before I left to make sure I should be reading 10 on my wideband. I did not get any CELs or flashing cruise lights.

I limped the car home and let it idle. The engine is visibly shaking and the car is running lean at idle around 15.5+. Normal idle for the car is around 14.7.

I did see that my rear diff, battery and brake lights would flicker earlier today after getting a tank of gas, but did eventually go away. So, I thought first we will try a different battery. Swapped the battery and no change on the shaking or running lean. I put the "newer" battery back in the car and still ran the same.

At this point I am thinking a bad injector. If the car wasnt making spark, it would go rich correct? Since the car is lean, I am guessing it is not getting as much fuel as it needs. It would also make sense if one of the cylinders is not firing, causing the engine shake.

It is late Saturday and I have a call into my tuner, into Deatchwerks and another local shop that cleans injectors. I dont intend on fixing anything today or even this weekend.

Possible and I will check for leaks tomorrow, but wouldnt that cause me to run rich?

Honestly, I didnt push it after it started to shake or drive it long. I was able to drive it, but the engine was very obviously shaking. I was still pulling 18-24inHg for vacuum.

Just checked the oil cap, no puffs of smoke and very little air coming out of the oil filler neck. No smoke at start up. I pulled a log at idle as well with the AP. But I dont know enough as to what i am looking at yet other than looking for knock correction and knock learning.

I did a bit more research and watched some stuff on youtube. I am starting to think I have a misfire as the car nearly sounds like it is running on 3 cylinders.

Im going to start pulling plugs and boost checking tomorrow. Might borrow a compression tester as well and start trying to eliminate things.

Holy bajesus I hope it isnt anything major..

sounds like you're running on 3 cylinders. Had this happen today and scared the hell out of me. The car was very shaky and had little to no power. Turned out to be the wiring on the coilpack for cylinder 4.
Good luck, let us know what you find.

How did you go about checking it? just pulling the plug for the coil pack to see if they car ran any different? How did you know it was the coil pack vs the spark plug?

I have pulled the drivers side #2 and #4 plugs and they look good. Compression on #2 and #4 are both 120psi on the cold block.

I did have one of the coilpack connectors fall off when I went to pull the coil pack for #4. I am wondering if it just wasnt connected well enough?! Regardless, I am checking the compression all around to make sure. Ill post up with more later.

I just checked all the plugs/coils and harness for each. Each one of them have a spark. I have always used NGK LFR6A-11 copper plugs. I think I am going to get new plugs regardless.

well if you think its a bad injector, start by unplugging each injector one at a time. if nothings changes u found your dead hole.

if you dont want to dig deeper, i know everyone at efi will help you out to correct/fix whatever is wrong. theyre great guys over there.

99% sure it is fixed. I am fairly confident that it was a disconnected coil pack on the drivers side. As I mentioned before, the #4 coil pack harness simply fell off of the coil pack when I went to remove #2.

I felt while I was working, it was a good idea to get some baseline compression numbers and confirm that the engine was OK.

I have to buckle everything back down, but the car is idling beautifully and is smooth as ever when I rev it. I am going to drive it a bit tonight to see how it goes.

Thanks for your help guys!

I moved the wire connected to the coil pack in a certain way the car would run fine, if i moved it a certain way I could get it to go back to running on 3 cylinders. Traced the wire and found that it had a break.

Something still isnt right. I wonder if the car was tuned with the coil pack not completely hooked up and now is acting funny. I emailed EFI and sent him 4 logs. The car is hesitating pretty badly under light throttle up to 50% and pulling timing under boost.

I got a new map from EFI and tried that tonight. It made things better, but it is still hesitating. No knock though. I tried turning down the boost and didnt really get any change. The car drives well around town, but as soon as I try to boost it beyond about 5psi, it starts going nuts.

I told him that I would be more comfortable scheduling another tune date and driving out again. I would rather have the car in his hands and correct the tune from my eff up of not checking the coil pack and be 100% sure about the car again.

Besides, what's another week after the car has been off the road for 3 1/2 months..

you didn't change your spark plugs did you? It sounds like what happens when you put the wrong gapped plugs in,will run fine until you boost.

wait 06's are still side feeds so if the cap fell off on his dw injector, unplugging it wont do a thing since it'll still flood the cyl. my guesses are either a tank of very bad gas, or he had the cap pop off a dw 850

The car was tuned the day before this happened on the very same plugs. Also, the car was being boosted a couple times before this issue came up. 2-3 WOT pulls before this came up.

Car made 388whp on these plugs on EFI's Mustang dyno.

Hadnt checked. I can do that though. What are you getting at? gas in the oil from a cylinder not firing?

Yes, 06s are side feed. What are you referring to as the cap? The gray cap on top of the injector or the plug? All the injectors are firing as far as I can tell. I put a long screw driver up to each one and listened and could hear each one firing.

Bad tank of gas is a possibility. I filled up at BJs on 93 like I always do. No changes there. But as above, I filled up and drove the car hard for a few pulls on this very same tank of gas and it was fine for those pulls. Why would the quality of the gas suddenly change?

This is not a tuning issue. The car ran fine for the 345mile drive home from EFI and the next morning. However, if the car was tuned with a problem and then I fixed the problem, that could make it wack out..
