ttt - I spoke with the regional (NW) SOA service person and he said he was not aware of SOA HQ issuing a TSB on this problem.

From my limited calls, dealers in this area are only just beginning to get aware of it (parts guy at Carter sounded like he just got the clue to order a few more valves, they don't have any).

It seems SOA will have to wait to see a lot of calls to the tech hotline and a lot of this part ordered under warranty to figure out there is a larger problem.

My light went off this morning.

  • Currently diagnosing this code on another car and will contact the owner (me) when the problem has been isolated

Other items to note:
  • I had just taken on 5 gallons of 90 octane gas with 1/4 tank of 92 octane remaining
  • Just about to enter a corner at about 45 miles per hour and had lifted throttle

*Manual
*CE light came on at 500,1000 and 1200miles, went off by itself first 2 times
*Carter Subaru, Seattle,WA
*Code P0303, misfire on cylinder 3
*Dealer is replacing sparkplug as I write this. I will talk to him about swapping injectors between cylinder #1 and #3 as I suspect that the plug isn't the problem.

RESULT: They replaced defective sparkplug. I now have 1800 miles and no problems with missing or CE light since fix. Also worth noting. They had to order the sparkplug and said at the time there were only 26 available in US. Hopefully this will change. So it was in the shop 4 days just for sparkplug.

Manual Trans...
1550 Miles...
Off at 2100 Miles, this I attribute to the fact that I have started the car 4 times since the light came on.
Took it to the dealer code P1443 - vent control solinoid. Reset it and sent me on my way.
Happened the first time that I ran the AC.

Got my second CE light. I posted earlier in this thread, but wanted to add my second experience.

-5-spd
-Came on at 867miles (4/12) off at ~950miles (4/14)
-Code P1443 (same as first time)
-Took to New Motors in Erie, PA (same as before)
-Mechanic read code, reset, sent me on my way. He called SOA, they said they are working on it (the P1443 and the misfire in cyl 3 are common). He personally expects a CPU reburn/replace in the coming months.

* I was lucky as a Subaru Technical Rep was at the dealership when I brought my car in for the 2nd CEL. He said that the cam angle relative the the crank position is what is causing the fault code. They don't know why some WRXs have this prob and others don't but the number is substantial and they are working on fixing the problem. It is a problem but the car is in no danger of being harmed he noted. What's interesting is that the light came on under hard acceleration both times. OB2 software takes a snap shot of what the engine was doing at the time of the fault. It was at 6750 RPM @ 44 KPH or wide open in 1st gear. He didn't imply that i was doing anything wrong but did state this. I drive like this every day and this car should be able to take it! He told me to reset the computer by cycling the key on an off 4 times and that the fault codes will be stored for them to check later.

The CEL light came back on once again later that evening under the same driving style but the light cleared itself.

I hope this helps everyone out.

I was able to get my car back after being in the shop for two days. The part is on order. I have driven it 200 miles without the CE light coming back. I am not too worried about it now. Glenn convinced me it's no big deal

04/26/2001 - Dealer Replaced Evaporative Drain Valve (vent control solenoid thingee).

I guess my knocking on wood didnt work, my car is 2044 miles old or so, and i got the CE light during lunch, it was after a downshift/hard accel..

The car feels slower, but it may be a placebo effect, since it idles/sounds just like it were normal, and it still boosts, although it feels like its boosting less..

oh and my info:

* Manual
* 4/18/00 ~2044 miles
* Havent Taken it in
* AutoPlaza/Trebol Motors (in PR)

5spd, no mods.

On at 1540mi (~80MPH, lifting throttle on highway)

Off at about 1700mi

No code pulled yet; will get it checked at first oil change. Noticed no difference in the behaviour of the car either while the CEL was on, or after it went off.

Greg.

I just received some info from my dealer and they are being told that it could be a faulty construction in the passenger rear where the charcoal canister is. They have actually reported leaks due to cracks in the hose or assembly. I will check mine this weekend for anything visible.

* transmission: manual
* CE at 160kms (last week - first day i got my car!!)
* codes: P0301 and P0303 - cylinder misfires in #1 and #3
* dealer: Oakville Subaru
* they weren't able to look at it until they have their lead guy there... hopefully this week
Does anybody have any clue as to the long term effect of these misfires? I'm pretty worried about it, but i might just be over cautious

Thumbs down

Hi, up until today I hadn't gotten the infamous light. It came on after a high rev pass at Auto-X. After my drive home it was still on. But later when I went for a trip to the store it was off. I won't reset the ECU until the dealer checks it.

* transmission - manual
* 04-22-2001 / 1555 miles
* what code ??
* Morries Subaru
* no action yet

Scoobydriver, I had the same situation. 1600+ miles and no CE light. Ran my first autox yesterday, and it was on after my 2nd run. :/ Oh well, I will let everyone sort it out, and when they figure out the 'fix', I will get it taken care of. I am sure it will turn itself off soon.

I just installed a K&N air filter yesterday, however, it seemed to happen when I lifted my foot of the gas. Dealer (specialty subaru) found nothing wrong, so reset ecu.

Dang, I thought I was home free after 2K CEL-free miles... I was taking it easy in the mountains when it came on. When I started the car for my 4th trip after coming on (the car was off for only 2 minutes between the 3rd and 4th trip), it turned off. The car runs fine. I'll get the code when I take it to get the oil changed.
