Default Making my own silicon hoses

Hand made?
Mandrel wrapped?
1000's of dollars for stuff that is made to fit a factory plumed car?

I did a little research on how hand made silicone hoses are made. First a solid stainless mandrel must be made with the same shape of the hose and the same ID as the hose you want to build or reproduce.. second the mandrel is bagged with a heat shrink release agent. Third the mandrel is wrapped with layers of silicone and reinforced fabric like nomex. forth the wrapped mandrel go's in to the batch oven. Last a the mold is removed from the mandrel, a water pressure system may be used or a port-a-power in my case.

I have a close friend that makes fishing gaffs out of solid stainless and showed him some of the more complex hoses I want to build he has the stainless rods in all the sizes I need so I dont have to buy 20' ft bar to make one 6" inch hose, he bends up to 1 1/4 - 316 stainless all day so the mandrels will be ez..

I have emails out to lots of silicone dealers but any help in finding the stuff I need for a proper lay up in colors like lime green or purple be cool....

Your friend plan on bending a 3" bar of 316SS for a mandrel too?

NO, I have a friend with a marine muffler shop... lol You can have up to a 10' round 1/4 wall pipe bent and shaped for a real big boats, I had 5 inch stainless elbows made for my boats turbo diesels.... You are not changing the shape of 3 inch round 1/4 wall 316 ss tube with a silicone hose.. Its simpler to drill and tap pipe than solid stock for vac bungs. You also do not want to work with a 200 pound mandrel. That amount of 316 will also be special order and bought by 15' or 20' ft and cost will hurt more then dropping the mandrel on your foot... I only know of two places that can true 316 shafts that thick but do not think they can bend 3 in round. If you had to have a big solid mandrel you'd have to make it out of wax and cast it or forge it...

But I am not doing any of that..
Every hose in my system with a bend is less then 1 inch.. My intake, and rad hose are polished aluminum as are all of my inter cooler pluming, so I will only need straight couplers in large sizes like 2" and 3" inches and do not need more then a 1/4 wall pipe to use as a Mandrel to pull them....

here is my ej25 so far

Default self-Fusing Silicone Tape

so this stuff only sticks to it self is good to 500 they make it in all kinds of blends and colors form the stuff your mom gets off HSN to hi heat, oil and gas resistant air force approved to glass in bedded reinforced tapes... once activated it cures to a solid bond in 24 hours and can be heat cured much faster... Used for every thing from taping up hurt GI's to making a quick fan belt.

so

wow

tape..

nice hoses are they scotch, duck, masking or samco made?

That silicon tape is pretty cool stuff. I was impressed at how well it sticks to itself.

Alternatively, you could use Wiggins fittings welded to your pipes...

yes in 10 weeks!!!!! thats not going to work for me. and I have to place my order in CA to have a guy email the UK and pay freight twice any time I need any thing... I am looking at over 1000 to dress my whole car with samco, that with the 10 week turn around, coupled with the fact that in the end I am paying and on hold 10 weeks for some one in the UK to wrap $20 tape around a stainless pipe.

Its kinda sad how lots of over seas parts makers seem to only sell parts in the usa thro fly by night websites and guys posing as auto shops... when it comes to placing an order direct they stand behind there brand deflating dealer list... and I just go some where I can buy direct... my cars engine is only all brian crower cuz he didn't send me to summit or jeggs, let alone pick your nose dot com...

I dont know Wiggins fittings, are they for hard lining the cooling and vac systems? I wanted to add some color to the engine with all the polishing under the hood and thats why I was thinking silicone.. I have stainless braided lines on my back half 69 dart and factory rubber on my frame off 63 cadillac, seemed silicone in some bright colors was what the wrx was calling for...

Got a link to them fittings? May be just what I need for the 850hp nascar powered 20' foot kevlar reinforced cigarette I am building right now. Full hard line systems have been popular for marine use for years now....

If you want to get this done quickly you could just use that silicon tape and wrap the hoses already on the car. This will be torture though. Are you sure you really want to make your own silicone hoses?

I removed the gellcoat from my 35ft bertram with a grinder....

that was torture

http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo...eat=directlink

I put 20oz S glass with vinyl ester resin on the bottom got it to stick up side down...

that was torture

http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo...eat=directlink

I put tri axle carbon with epoxy on the bottom next same way hard work

that was sticky nasty messy tortures hell you can't understand

http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo...eat=directlink

nothing is ez...

Even if you can afford any thing taking pride in others work is only so rewarding....

No one will ever do any thing for you as well as you can do it your self.

If I had every thing done for me I'd know nothing and have less..

hose making seems like two or three days of work with the learning curve... and can pull 3 or 4 sets for back ups plus make some hose for my other 3 cars and two boats...

It is your DIY type of mentality that makes the world turn. Believe me I am on your side.

So what do you think of the idea to just wrap the OEM hoses. Should not be too hard. I think that Si tape will work just fine. It is pretty durable and wrapped around an OEM hose will just make it stronger. Post pics when you start doing it.

I'm curious as how this is going to be done. I'm guessing a reinforcing layer will be needed to keep the form with heat. Keep us posted on the progress!

Ya I thought about that, seems like it'd work fine. The only thing I can think that may go wrong with that idea is the tape may shrink to much?? They make fiberglass reinforced tape so you can still add 3 more ply. I'd think the burst psi of a factory molded hose is going to be grater then that of a single play hand made hose.... So in turn a factory molded hose with 3 ply of extra reinforced silicone "I think" will much stronger the a 100% hand made hose..

well no one making hose is rely talking to much,, I have see in a place or two that a reinforced scrim is added in between the layers of rubber but fiberglass reinforcing can be made right into the tape and from a lay up stand point it be much simpler just to use reinforced tape coated on both sides so one layer is = to one ply.....

Yes, these are for hardlines. All the racecar stuff I do IRL and Nascar stuff is hardlined with Wiggins ends. They are for Aircraft originally. You can use o-rings of different mat'l for different apps.
