I believe it's just a cheaper compound of plastics... I had a 2009 that scrapped a couple times, no horizontal impacts, and broke right on that dumb empty hole just like Knighthawk above, but worse than that some jerk ran a stop sign and totalled it. So I bought a 2011 in November! Well, same deal with the scrapes on the bottom, but no cracks from that. I even hit a high spot in a muddy parking lot at something close to a 45 angle of attack. That bent it out so bad the clips popped like the pics PlayUltimate2 posted. I just smacked it back in place and drove off... It's been 30 or less degrees here so I'll be sure to check for these nefarious cracks going around this season...

Cheapest option is get the bumper replacement, which will be unpainted, for around $200. Then get a shop to paint match it for the best price you can find, or buy the paint from Subaru if you have you're own sprayer and know how to stage paint a car part and clear coat it. Whatever you do, don't fix it until the Winter is over! lol.
