Had a decent ride today. Still encountered some snow in spots, but overall not too bad for April conditions.

Took a photo before I left home to head into town:

Where are you riding that the trails are dry enough? Everything's still really soft in the upper valley.

I rode the Side Hill Trail in North Conway that is, well...on the side of a hill. There were some stream crossings, but the trail itself was fairly dry. Any trails down on the flats are a lot wetter.

New season, another set of new free replacement cranks from SRAM. Maybe these will last me more than a season.

I haven't been following DH tech progress in a while-that rear linkage design is wacky looking. Tell me about it.

You put a saddle that loud on the bike, you better have the jersey and lungs to match.

Anyone care to recommend a decent entry-level bike for commuting and occasionally trail riding? As well as a good store to buy it from around Boston? It's gonna have to stay locked up outside, so I don't want something too expensive/flashy.... or something that will crap out if left outside all winter.

Other option is to look for something used.

Canadian:

If you are going to leave it outside in Boston....I have to in all honesty and without any bit of sarcasm recommend Walmart or better yet a department store bike purchased used.

Any bike shop bike will be to nice to leave outside in the city. It will not stay in good condition or stay in your possession if kept locked up outside.

If you live in an apartment, a bike can be brought inside as long as you don't have to many stairs to climb. You could also look into a folding bike. A folding bike can be brought into buildings, and carried on the subway with you (even during rush hour). Good Luck.

Went for an Easter MBT ride today, already feeling strong and its still early in the season. Riding with Nemba on Wednesdays when the weather cooperates. Dinner at Tony's in Millbury after most rides. Look forward to meeting some of you then.

I'll just clarify a little. I'll be going to Northeastern University next year so I will be living in dorms. As far as I know... there is no storage area for students. When I made the post I thought that students wouldn't be allowed to bring bikes into their dorms... however thinking about it now I think that I probably could.... don't really see any reason why not to (other than the fact that it will take up space in an already tiny room).

When the weather is nice out I would be leaving it outside though.... during the winter I think it would make the most sense just to disassemble it as much as possible (with the limited toolkit I will be bringing) and stick it under my bed.

I shall make some inquiries, perhaps I am just delusional and there actually is some sort of storage area.

I'll point out that I am currently riding a Fuji Odessa hybrid.... nothing fancy but seems to do the job fine for commuting and very light trails. Would like disc brakes for sure though. Never had a problem with theft in Toronto as it's either in my garage, or when I'm out somewhere I always make sure to lock it up.

Edit:

OK so there is no storage facilities for bikes or anything. Outside only. I don't know what the theft/crime rate is for the area around Northeastern? It's near Fenway, that's all I can really tell you about the location since I've only visited once! But yes, during the riding months the bike will be outside, and during the winter I will be taking it apart and storing it in my dorm room.

With that all being clarified.... any suggestions? I will also need a decent lock of course.

I had a cheap Trek hybrid that I kept U-locked to a fence at Wentworth (right down the street from NU). One night while I was in the library someone tried to pry it off the iron fence. Ended up destroying the bike in the process. Nothing is safe outside if it has value as a object of $$ or entertainment when left in public.

You should be able to bring the bike inside the dorm. I know when I lived on campus in a suite, we kept bikes in the common areas.

Good luck in the city and at school. Have a beer for me at Punters...if it is still there.

Ah that sucks man.... sounds quite different than Toronto. Though last night I got pretty spooked here after I took a wrong turn coming home at 2AM and ended up in Little Jamaica in my mom's G37 coupe.... a couple guys surrounded the car from behind when I was stopped at a light, luckily it changed when it did.

Is a U-lock going to be stronger than one of the longer wire combination locks? I've always used the wire locks but I suppose a U-lock may be the better choice.

And yes after talking to a few other Northeastern students on one of the facebook groups it seems like most bring their bikes inside the dorm. At the very least I'll be bringing the front wheel and seat in and locking everything else up outside during the fall/winter. I definitely will be getting a "cheap" bike though, and peeling off any manufacturer decals.

Thanks, it will definitely be quite the experience for the next 4/5 years. I'll try my best on that beer... too bad you guys have such a high drinking age down in the US though!

Hit up Rocky Neck yesterday; mud, rocks, and sea breeze

Does anybody know of a MTB club near Old Lyme, CT? I'm new to the area, and am getting bored riding alone. Thanks!

I ride with the Blackstone Valley guys when I can. Most of the rides are close to my work and home.
