the rings are going to be specific to whatever wheels you are buying. find out the hub bore of the wheels, and get appropriate rings (Subaru uses a 56.1mm center bore).

Hey dan! sorry for the thread jack buttt...
I just purchased a new car and got some new wheels on it. from 17x8 to 18x9.5. 235-255 forgot the other ratios. I cannot get a consensus on whether or not I need an alignment. Most says no but I should just to be on the safe side. I have not gotten an alignment, but was wondering if i should? Another thing is that I have 2 sets of wheels, one for the snow and one for the summer, will this require me to get an alignment after i swap out to the other set? Thanks again.

Wheels don't change your suspension geometry.....no alignment needed.

So if I were to get a set of 18x9.5 Rota DPT 44 offset with 265/35R18 tires I should be ok with out any suspension or fender rolling? Will I notice much of a difference while driving it? And with that wheel/tire combination will I be able to lower the car in the future without any kind of suspension or fender rolling? Sorry for my ignorance, just want to be sure before I make any kind of purchase.

Probably.

Compared to what?

I can't give you a guarantee, but with moderate lowering the +44 and 265 width MAY clear without rolling the back. It should be fine in the front.

Thanks Dan, I was comparing it to the stock set up. I've heard people say that after a fender roll they have had paint crack around the area. From your experience is that something to be overly concerned about?

Yes, you should be concerned about it. To reduce the chance of that happening we use a special fender-rolling tool, and a heat gun to soften the paint up. We have a pretty good record doing it, but your mileage may vary.

Best bet is to buy rims/tires that fit the car without modification. THen no worries.

Awesome thread! Sadly it looks as if I may have to get the fenders rolled on whichever year(2011/2012) I end up buying after all. >.<

Dan - what size tire would you suggest for a 2011 wrx, 18x8.5 +44 wheels, lowered about 1.4 inches?

they came with some 225/40s and I am not liking them at all. based on what I've read from this thread, 245/35 or 255/35 would be a good fit?

Entaille, the stock STI has 8.5" rims and they run 245's, Start there.

Hey Dan,

Thanks a ton for the info. This thread is exactly what I was looking for, kind of a compilation of information from the past few years of people having STi's.

I'm looking forward to my new '11 wrx and am thinking about 18x9 preferably or 18x8.5 if there are any problems with a 9". From what I've gathered there should be no fender rolling or problems with a 9" wide tire that is in the right place in terms of offset, correct?

Smeerone said "18x8.5 or 9 5x100 offset 38-45." Is that the sweet spot to keep it as close to stock as possible?

Basically I'm looking to probably lower it a tiny bit eventually, not a lot, but I don't want to rub if I am really running hard around corners.

Also you mentioned:

A production prototype should be ready in about a week. After that, 1-2 months before the main shipment arrives.

Do we get any hints about what's comin other than size'?

Edited to correct my own failure of reading:
Crap, I was thinking you were saying 18x9, not 17x9. Damn. Oh well.. Back to looking for some good black 18x9's. (I've got back and forth in my own head as to what size I want over the past few days.)

Out of curiosity... what would it require to change the actual bolt pattern to a 5x114? I know they make adapters or whatever but I'm not interested in that. I was just wondering how feasible it was to properly change the bolt pattern.

Dan,

Very informative post! I too have a question about fitment. I am looking to get the Enkei GTC01s 18 x 8 offset +48 and 245/40/18s. I am not planning on lowering my car, or roll the fenders. Would I experience rubbing/issues with this set up? Thanks in advanced!

We'll probably do an 18x9 after the 17's have arrived and are selling.

It's not practical. You'd need to change hubs, and the 5x114 hubs have different front struts, and different axles. And the different axles have a different rear differential. And the different rear differential goes with a front differential, which is in your transmission. It would be very complicated and expensive to change it...

It should fit easily, with no rubbing. That tire is the same as the stock STI tire, and the offset is within 5mm of the stock offset. Easy fit.

I'd consider a wider wheel if you can, though. 8" is kind of skinny for a 245 tire.

This is great news, that's more likely when I'll be actually looking to BUY rims anyways.

Thanks for the info on the switch, I'll just cross that off my list of things to do. Hah.

I have heard that sometime a group of people can get together and order a strange setup for a rim from a manufacturer if there are enough people willing to pay for them... Is this only for certain manufacturers or do most of them do this? I'm curious because I really like the Enki PF01's [enki.com url] in black, but they don't make a 18x9 5x100.

I like the Rota G-Force's you have on your site there Dan, but do you have any pictures of them in the blacks? The Rota D-Force's look pretty similar to the Enki's as well but they aren't available in a 9, only a 9.5 and I'm not really sure I want to roll the fender's... I'm a bit worried about the paint having problems down the line or the front's rubbing when cornering hard after it's got a more agressive stance (lowered a bit).

How well do those adapters actually work? I feel like they would be less safe for some reason.

I don't pretend I know what I'm talking about... but from what I've heard, you are correct. They are basically only for people who want their car to roll slowly down the road with exactly the look they want, but don't want to push their car in terms of performance.

I kept seeing people on this board tell people that adapters are "NOT AN OPTION". So I did a quick google search and almost all the results, regardless of what site it was on, said the exact same thing haha.

I'd be interested in WHY they aren't safe however. That much I did't bother looking into.
