Default Scratched my new bumper, help a newb fix it

I feel like an idiot. Just a few days after getting my car, I scratched the front bumperThis front end is much longer and lower then anything I've ever driven. Heres a pic

I have very little experience with fixing anything like this, so please be kind. Here's how I figure I can make this look pretty good:

-Smooth out the area with a fine grit sandpaper (2000?)
-Apply several (4-5) coats of touch up paint I should be getting from the dealer in a few days
-Smooth out again with fine sandpaper
-Polish area, wax, and stop crying

Does this sound about right? Or are the gashes too deep for this to work effectively?
