I wanna do this to mine but have always worried about the Paint flaking or fading on the inside. Have you seen any problems like this happen?

ok spoon fed version: 1. remove lights 2. remove bulbs & screws holding (2) pieces of the light together. 3. pre-heat oven 150-200* & remove middle rack. 4. place prepped light in oven on cookie sheet, bake for 15-20 minutes 5. remove light from oven its hot. 6. carefully separate the (2) haves of the light. 7. remove ambers, scuff & paint the chrome facia 8. let dry at least 30-45 minutes. Better overnight. 9. reassemble the light. 10. bake again to set the adhesive. 11. reinstall. Rob |

What kind of paint are you using for this? I definitely want to do this but i want the paint to last, are you using primer or another type of adhesion promoting primer?

I've been following this for a bit, you do great work man.
After seeing the tails I've gotta ask, how much would you charge to do this for my hawkeye? Headlights and taillights I mean ![]() |

Please don't listen to the above poster. 450 Fahrenheit on a front headlamp, made of polycarbonate (PC), will cause it to melt, even more so the taillamp, which are usually made of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). These plastics, which are not as impact resistant as PC, melt at 160 C but will probably begin to meltflow at the temperatures people use to melt the butyl rubber seal on headlamps. You can go through threads here and see idiots who've tried it and then have cried about ruining their tails.
The referenced guy with the taillamp modification either 1) used a low enough temperature or locally heated the butyl seal with a heatgun just enough to get it to be pliable, or 2) cut the seal with an exacto knife and some brute force. |

With tails you don't use the oven. Your best friend is a Dremel rotary tool to cut the lights open. After painting the housing and assembling everything you have to glue pieces together. I used JB Weld, worked great!
For headlights - 230-240 degrees for 15 minutes. Trust me, that's the best option, atleast for 02-07 WRX and STI headlights. |

Did my 04 wrx a few year back- didn't paint, just cleared them out. Still looks good.
Just have to be real careful with the gooey, hot, stringy, messy black sealant when pulling the front & rear parts of the light assembly apart. |
