Default ever had a stripped cam bolt?? here's a 5 minute fix from Outfront Motorsports

***********We have seen a lot of posts regarding the removal of stuck cam bolts and methods of how to hold the cam gear in the futile attemps to remove these bolts with success. We have heard of horror stories of drilling, special bits and long times to do it, we have personally seen the results of dealerships using cut-off wheels/air chisels and the damage left behind on the gears that the dealer reinstalls.

the video was not edited, the motor we have is a ej205, three of the four cam bolts came loose with an impact gun, the forth one did not. this method for us is so fast that it's not worth the time to clamp the timing belt together, nor to use the cam tool. On really tight ones with the tool, we have chipped the gears. we have also seen broken head castings due to using a wedge/prybar on the cam lobes.

Often the cam bolt get really tight due to heat cycles, with the welding we do, the rapid heat applied to a stripped bolt makes them come off like butter, not damaging the cam gear at all. If you are local to us, we would perform this operation for $20 per bolt

nice trick! what i always do is put some valve grinding compound in the allen head, prevents it from striping

done this more times than i can count that trick works 90% of the time on almost any broken or stripped bolt... great post!!!

Not to ruin anything......but the zipp zipp of that impact gun is a little bit less than realistic....(maybe in a perfect world) so what does he tell you about what the cam dowell is rounding out ?when they dont just pop off? truth be told....FYI....leave the belt on, use a strong 10mm bit, and buy the damn cam wrench cheapskates......if you dont/won't then go ahead and weld yourself a CAI for a flood zone because your obviously retarded....I know its sounds great but this is not your normal occurance, for it to be that easy........in a worst case senario use a craftsman sprialed nut remover or use a die grinder and cut the top of the bolt into a hexagon and use a 17mm 12pt socket to remove it with (the cam sprocket tool! cheapskates!!!!!!)

does the composite cam gear warp under heat load from the welder?

i. always break cam bolts loose with a breaker bar,pipe extension wedged in between the hoist and turn the cam itself, with the timing belt still attached. ive never had a problem with my method.

i just did this on ALL FOUR CAM BOLTS! good thing i had 4 brand new axle nuts laying around. i pulled out my miller welder and welded em on and broke out my 3/4 in mikita impact gun and BAM! off like butter!!! I DUNNO ABOUT $20 a piece to remove but i did it myself for free

Wish I saw this a little while ago. Tried welding allen keys to the inside of the bolt and ended up shearing those in half. Now I have a mess to clean up before I can try this method.
