Default New Mondeo spied

Quote:
You’ve already seen Ford’s stunning Evos concept, and now here’s the car it’s set to inspire! These sensational spy shots are our first glimpse at the next-generation Mondeo, due in 2013, and just as we revealed in last week’s mag, its sleek design will stick closely to Ford’s Frankfurt concept.

Key to the Evos’ new face is a familiar element – the big, inverted trapezoidal front grille already seen on the Fiesta, Focus and C-Max – but it’s now much higher up, replacing the old thin top grille. The badge has been refined and jumps onto the bonnet and two very slim and angular headlamps frame the new mouth.
Don’t think those great lights are too conceptual to make production either, as Ford European design boss, Martin Smith boldly asserted: “Future production cars will have headlamps so akin to this concept you won’t notice the difference.”

Take a look at the new Mondeo’s nose, and even through the heavy camouflage those slot-like lights are visible. So too is the outline of the large upper grille stretching almost to within touching distance of the lamps. Underneath a neat horizontal intake flanked by foglights is also visible. According to global design boss J Mays, “this design is about being more sophisticated, pared down and definitive, it doesn’t provoke, it seduces.”

A concept version of the Mondeo, much closer to production, is widely tipped to break cover at the Geneva Motor Show in March next year, before going on sale 12 months after that. As you’d expect, the show car’s quadruple gull-wing doors and massive wheels won’t make the showrooms, but key features will. These include the two taut feature lines, bulging rear wheel arches and raked back window graphic on each side, plus the thinner-looking front windscreen A-pillars.

As well as a wide range of EcoBoost petrol engines and 2.0 TDCi models with higher fuel efficiency than ever, the powertrain from the C-Max Energi concept car, which debuted in Detroit earlier this year, is also expected to be offered. It combines a range-extending 2.0-litre petrol engine with an electric motor to deliver over 500 miles between fill-ups, and zero-emissions range of around 50 miles.

I don't like the wheels.

Since the next Fusion is to be based on the Mondeo, I hope they haven't diluted this one too much.

I'm not 100% convinced this is the Mondeo or any European market car. I could be completely wrong as I havent researched this but, notice the keypad on the B pillar? Typically thats a US Ford or Lincoln feature, I dont ever remember seeing that on any Fords in the UK. Of course, I havent lived there in 10 years, but I was just over there for 2 weeks and didnt see that on the current Mondeos.

Of course, I could be totally wrong and that could be a spare bit of camo tape

Car is left hand drive, but more importantly, the plate cut out is US shaped.

I think that makes this the USified Fusion side of the new Fusion/Mondeo vehicle, ergo the door buttons.

The Ford EVOS is the first concept car in a long time that I'd actually consider plunking the money down for, regardless of what powers it.

It does look kind of big. Like Taurus Coupe kind of big. Those wheels are probably 20-22" diameter show-car bling.

But slick. The first car from FoMoCo since the 93-97 Probe GT (in it's day, and even through 2002 (I had one from '99-'02) that I thought looked both thoroughly modern, and aesthetically pleasing.

Mustang is good looking, but can't be considered thoroughly modern, and retro at the same time.

I was hoping the DeTomaso Ghepardo Concept would be built with a bit of Mangusta aft gull-wing flavor to it.

It is pretty much vaporware, and I wouldn't count on a production Evos with 4 gull wing doors, either, unfortunately. Playing it safe, and government regulations will probably keep originality and innovation out, and turn Evos into a Taurus or next-gen Fusion based coupe.

New Ford Mondeo revealed

We reveal the dramatic new look of the next Ford Mondeo, set to feature a hi-tech cabin and efficient engines

Quote:
Ford is gearing up to unveil the most desirable Mondeo ever. With a look inspired by the stylish four-door Evos concept car, plus a host of
hi-tech kit, the saloon will hope to shift its everyday image.
Set to debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2012, the car will hit the road next summer.

Our exclusive illustrations – based on insider information
and recent spy shots – show the Mondeo gets the latest Kinetic 2 design language.
This includes the large, inverted trapezoidal grille from the Fiesta, Focus and C-MAX, yet more pronounced and mounted higher up. Another key feature is the narrow headlights.

But the look is about much more than simply the blue oval’s family face. Two boldly defined feature lines adorn the sides, while bulging rear wheelarches and a steeply raked roofline reveal the car’s sporty intentions.

It’s not only the looks that
will be inspired by the Evos;
the Mondeo will also lift its
powertrain from the concept. The range-extending 2.0-litre petrol engine and electric motors won’t be offered from launch, but will follow. This will allow for an electric-only range of around 50 miles and about 500 miles between fill-ups.

More conventional engines will make up the rest of the range, including Ford’s 1.6
and 2.0-litre EcoBoost petrol turbos. In the current car,
the latter produces 200bhp and returns 36mpg economy, while the 1.6 – as found in the C-MAX
– will offer 150bhp and 180bhp outputs. Also available will be a range of diesel models, including a 112bhp 1.6-litre TDCi and a 2.0 TDCi with 137bhp or 163bhp.

Even the traditional engines will be among the most efficient on the road thanks to eco
tweaks currently used in
the latest models, such as the
Focus. These include stop-start, brake energy regeneration and active aerodynamics that close the grille at high speeds to improve fuel efficiency.

Under the skin will be a
modified version of the current Mondeo’s front-wheel-drive
chassis, which will include
torque vectoring for the first time.
This helps to shuffle power between the front wheels in
corners to prevent understeer.

Inside, the impressive fit
and finish and high-quality
materials used in recent Fords will help the Mondeo bridge
the gap to more expensive
rivals from Audi and BMW. A range of hi-tech gadgets will make the newcomer one
of the most advanced models
on the road.
This includes the SYNC entertainment system, which can play audio, read text messages and deal with voice commands through wirelessly connected smartphones. In addition, the Mondeo will get features such as lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring and parking assistance.

you understand the male concept of 'blowing your entire load' up front, apply that idea to making production cars that nice from a cost/profit standpoint. It'll make more sense.

The next Fusion will be using the Mondeo platform, it could be quite similar. We'll see, though...

I like the look, but I'm surprised by the "fastback" rear roofline. Time will tell.

But, it can't be good looking. Everyone told me when the new Impreza came out, that door mounted mirrors are ugly.

Seriously, greenhouse looks a bit Mazda 6, in a bad way. Otherwise looks good. Waiting for reality though.
