Hey -
I just picked up my first STi this past weekend. Its THE car I've wanted since 2006 and I love it so far! It is completely stock, but hasn't been its whole life. It used to have a TBE running a stage 2 map. Right now The only mods are rally armor mudflaps and the APv2 running a stage 1 tune so I can monitor the engine. I'll be going to Subaru to get it looked over soon. I just hit 20,200 miles on the way home and got 26 mpg! Anywho, I have a few questions. Noises...Holy cow. Is it just the stock tires that make the road noise excessively loud? I realize there isn't much sound dampening material, but I feel the stock tires make the most noise. Whistling Noise - It whistles while cruising (Not spooled). Sounds like coming from the rear diff, sometimes up front too. Normal? Slow reverse sharp turn - Sounds like the rear diff is locked when the DCCD is on auto. I've looked into it and set it to fully open and sound does go away. Should it do this on auto? All diff. fluid was changed with amsoil. Heres some pics to keep everyone happy. It needs a good polish and wax. ![]() ![]() ![]() /\ Old vs. New ![]()

Nice low miles heh. I just clicked over 90k on my 05' :P
(Yes the car is loud. Ive had 3-4 types of tires and they are all loud. Winter ones less so) |

Nice car! The stock RE070s are super loud, but they're super grippy! I now have Falken 615s on my car, and they're actually quite a bit quieter if you can believe that. I've had another car in the past with the RE070s and have noticed that they're super loud and crash over bumps too.
There is going to be a lot more sounds from the car compared to your old car. My car has leaks at the windows that's a whistling sound. I've noticed that the car shutters when in gear at low speeds and just about fully locked too. |

Welcome! Very nice grab indeed especially with that low mileage! Any further plans for it?

Most of my plans are to just maintain it and drive it! Only mods I might do are a catback, intake, and an alpine INA-910BT Headunit.
Maybe some better speakers and a basstube. I dont want to go crazy like i did with the sound system in my Saturn.(4000W amp, kicker 12's...) Oh, and some snow tires are next once the Saturn is gone. I'm going to have some fun this winter. |

sweet car. I have a 2007. Love this body style.
About the road noise, like most people said, these cars are loud. It would help if you have a music turned on so you wouldn't hear the road noise as much ![]() Is the "Whistling Noise" you are talking about more like a whining noise when you let go of the gas and keep it in gear? If so, this is completely normal. About the DCCD settings, mine does the same thing. When in auto, when I start moving (1st gear or reverse) and make a sharp turn, rear tires skip... Seem like they shouldn't but I am guessing it's normal, or to be exact they are designed that way (it is locked at that point). I still would like someone to confirm this though. lastly, beautiful car you got. Treat her well and she will last on you ![]() |

Love the Hawkeyes as well! I also agree with what everyone basically says above. These cars do carry a lot of road noise but the stock tires definitely add to it. You will probably notice a small difference after changing but soon will get to thinking there's a lot of road noise again. lol or at least that's what happened to me. But then again, I didn't buy this car in hopes of having the quietest car

Congratulations on the purchase. I got my 07 with 22,000, 2 years ago. From what I see all the sounds you describe are normal, the one I don't know about is the "whistle". You can always find someone else with an STi find out if its normal. Good luck and have fun.

bondo007man - Keep on it! I just graduated in May with my BS in electrical engineering. I've waited SOOO long to get my dream car; It's ridiculous how committed I have been to getting the same car for the past 5 years.
I'm glad my noises are normal noises. Makes me feel more confident. |

If you read the owners manual, it will explain the reverse noises and clunkyness. The gearbox and differentials are relativley noisey, remember there is no sound dampening in the car other than the thin carpet. Just FYI, when it gets cold and the gear oil gets thick, the gearbox noises will be even louder. |

Icrashalot, I am in the same boat as you were and I was wondering about noises. Did yours ever make a popping noise almost like a backfire whenever you let off the gas and coasted to a stop? Is that normal?

Ah...no. That shouldnt happen. It sounds like your tune is running rich after you let off the gas.
