Default 08 Squeaky Clutch pedal...anything to worry about?

Have an 08 2.5i w/ 27k miles on it. Never raced or launched or anything of that nature. Just a normal DD car. Now my clutch pedal just recently started to squeak only when its about to touch the floor. Any ideas on what it could be? Also feels unsmooth at the same time the squeaking starts.

Squeaky Clutch Pedal ~ cracked firewall.

I would take it to the dealership. The 08 09's have a history of the firewall cracking where the master brake cylinder mounts to it.. Subaru of America has it logged as a "known issue". I guess they don't find it important enough to make it a recall.

To prevent it you could have put a master cylinder brace (grimmspeed works well). I would still install one after the firewall is re-welded.

You could do it yourself but you have to remove the entire dash to weld it in the correct spot.

Ah...that explains why i heard a bang noise when i was driving home today. So its covered under warranty?

Would it be bad if i still drove it like this for a couple of days?

Granted you haven't modded your car ( or u have a understanding dealership) it will be covered. I wouldn't recommend driving it like this for too long. The crack will just keep getting bigger and eventually hurt other components.

Not so fast... I've seen many ppl with this issue getting NO support from SOA or being told that the weldings are fine. It could be the firewall or it could be something else.

Well its modded...suspension and wheels only. Shouldnt it be covered since those have nothing to do with the firewall cracking....

And it stopped squeaking and feels smooth again after my car cooled down. Hasnt came back since...

You are correct. Having suspension and wheels has nothing to do with the firewall. But most dealerships will find any reason not to warranty and issue. This is completely stupid because the dealership will get paid the same from SOA for a warranty repair as if the customer was paying for it. Here's the crappy part is a lot of dealerships in CA charge the customer more on labor than they do the manufacturer. This is a big reason why the dealership tries to find reasons not to warranty something. ON all actuality the dealership should not be charging the customer more than what they charge the manufacturer.

Good luck on your situation. I really hope its not a crack on the firewall.

As for not getting help from SOA... has these people with issues called them personally. Never take the dealerships word.

I had this problem it started when my 08 still had under 30000 on it. Then I went stage 2 and along with that setup was a clutch after my stock one went. Right around 65000 my clutch pedal mounting support brace snapped clean off the firewall. It was only held on by 3 tiny bead welds and about 6 pinch welds. Long story short I took the dash out and started welding. I lost all shiftng abilities when this happened. Way beat. Good luck.

I think I might have something similar to this as within the last month my clutch pedal started squeaking. I've had someone press the clutch and checked from the outside and the noise is definitely inside the care somewhere. I then shot some white lithium grease over all the moving pedal parts I could see including the piston going through the firewall (now the car smells lovely inside). The grease just didn't seem to do anything to it. I read a number of posts where it's common for the clutch slave to be noisy but what about the clutch master, could it be the source? How can I tell if its the welds, from under the dash the several welds I see on the firewall plate look OK even when the clutch is pressed. I did notice that when the clutch was pressed in the clutch master seemed to 'flex' a little ever so slightly. If this is a cracked weld issue does SOA cover this under a recall or the like? My 2008 has like 52k on it.

Thanks guys for the feedback.

The crack on the firewall is going to be by where you brake pedal mounts. You won't notice a whole lot of flex on the firewall from the clutch pedal. The brake pedal stresses that place a lot more than the clutch. SOA knows about the problem with the 08 and 09s and it's listed as a known problem but not a recall. If ur car isn't heavily modded your local dealer should warranty this for you. Grimmspeed makes a master cylinder brace to prevent the crack. I would invest in one after u get ur firewall fixed.
The dealer will have to remove ur entire dash to fix it properly so be aware they will have your car for a few days.

Well mine has now gone to worrying the crap out of me mode. My clutch has been creaking and moaning for a good month now and as mentioned no amount of lube helped it. I've begun the steps of working with my dealer on the fix but they have never heard of this. Sooo this weekend my wife hops behind the wheel and we head off to lowes. The mutha is SILENT and she says it feels strange. I hop behind the wheel and sure enough its quiet now and the clutch is grabbing right off the floor now. I'd say the clutch pedal doesn't feel like it's doing anything until about 50-60% down travel. Before with the squeak it grabbed on the top side of the pedal throw maybe around 25-30%.

What could cause that to just stop making noise and give such a different pedal feel? The dealer wants me to bring it in now and of course it's not making any noise...

If it has stopped making noise the crack has gotten worse. The dealer should know about the problem. The crack is behind where the brake pedal mounts. NOT THE CLUTCH pedal mount. It's a known problem for the 08 my.

Thats kinda what I thought by be the issue, hopefully they'll be able to get me in soon. They were able to track someone down there who knew who to call at SOA and they all seem enlightened now. They don't seem concerned about a warranty at the moment it's a matter of getting a loaner car now. Hopefully some SOA rep gave them a 'code' to charge this off too and not have to hit my extended warranty. With any luck it won't do more damage before they figure things out and I can get it in there.

I don't see how the master cyl brace from grimspeed will stop this. The bracket is breaking off from the inside because of leverage and poor mounting.

How has it turned out for you turbosteve?

there is a rubber stopper where the pedal stops. that stopper may be torn and gone.

When I looked in to this I found a post from someone that used the Grimspeed brace and their weld breaks and noise did get worse over time so it didn't help. Thankfully this has been resolved for me as I took it to my local dealer and with some persistence they repaired it for free even though I was out of warranty. It took them only 2 days to fix but nearly a week to get in touch with the right people at SOA to tell them how to fix it. I was told this was the first one they fixed at this dealer and their 20 year veteran Subaru mechanic had never seen this before.

I was eager to think this solved my noisy morning throw out bearing noise and it was gone for a few days but has returned so I guess I'm going to need that replaced soon too. All in all the clutch feels nice now and only has the faintest squeak when I press it in and can only be heard when everything is off in the car.

The dealer got the firewall repair covered with the exception of a $100 deductible. Given that I didn't purchase the car from them, I felt it was a decent compromise. I haven't seen the final tab for the oem clutch install...

Any info on what process they took to fix the firewall?

Keep it in your pants man.

When I post a question do I need to write exactly everything I do already know? I've been following this on multiple forums.

I know the dash needs to come out, well atleast for some people it seems.

I want more details. As to how the repair was made.

If you want to know exactly how it's done pick up a phone or drive to a local dealership and as their master tech on how it's done.

What are you having a problem understanding?

I want to hear from him, how "His" car was fixed.

Have you been following this issue? I thought you have been. Everyones car has been fixed from dealerships with different tactics.

Chev - they pulled the steering column, towed it to the body shop, had it welded. At least, that is what they've told me so far. I should get the car back tomorrow evening.
