Wait and get a true Tactrix cable, or build your own. Just posted my somewhat amateur findings and future goals in another thread with a Vag-com cable, which is really all the BFM is. Special drivers will not overcome circuit incompatibility issues.

What it boils down to, is that Colby Boles of Tactrix figured out how to communicate with the 02/03 (04/05?) ECU and his design is patented. You will not find an equivalent unless you build your own copy, which is allowed with the open source idea.

I ordered one of these cables for my car, now I am being told that it will not work for my year ecu.

I was just planning on using ecuexplorer to data log as I am unable to flash my ecu. Does anyone know if this cable/software will work on the older single plug, 96 pin ecu's? Anybody have any experience data logging these older ecu or can point me in a direction.

Thank you,
Robert

ECUexplorer and the other tools we use wont work on your 99 Legacy. As you have now discovered it has a JECS ecu and all of these tools are designed around the Denso ECU. You might look into the EVOscan software for your application. I know nothing about it but some have said that it will work with a JECS ecu.

I have a true Tactrix cable, in fact I have bought 3 of them. 1 ver 1.3 and 2 of the newer ones. the first 2 failed, the second one is very unreliable you have to have the cable wiggled just right for it to work and if you were to slightly brush against it, it might lose COM.

so for non 02-03s, really 100+ dollars for a cable that you can get same results for 10 bucks, just doesn't make any sense.

I am not trying to flame tactrix or anything, but really they can pull up my name and see I bought 3 of them, I am not exactly happy about the build quality for the money, for that money it should be at least a couple year no fault warranty to the original purchaser, most of us are not going to use it once and put it in our sock drawer.

I just received a BFM cable in the mail, i'm going to test it for my car when I get home.

Edit, I'm able to pull a learning view and run the rom raider logger with no extra software support needed. Waiting to test it on ECU flash.

thanks

Click on the Microsoft start button at the lower left corner. Right click "Computer" and select "Properties" from the context menu that pops up. You should get a form that shows what kind of operating system you have and whether you have a 32 or 64bit computer.

I didn't read your post quite right. The 32/64bit drivers are refering to the type of cpu in your PC/laptop. The car ecu 16bit/32bit difference does not impact your choice of drivers. Once you get your computer set up, you'll be able to talk to both types of ecu.

Beauch, let us know if you're able to read and reflash the ECU image. I know it's not possible with the VAG-COM cable on a 2002-2003 WRX (also 16-bit ECU).

Logging should work for you, just be aware that you may need to get a real Tactrix cable/adapter to read and flash the ECU image.

VagCom and Linux

Has anyone gotten this to work?

Im having trouble finding the USB port that the cable is hooked into.

Any Linux experts?

I am Running Linux Mint 11 on a dell mini 9
I am under the impression that the kernal that it is using has the FDTI drivers already in it. Am I wrong? Thanks

Default Vag-Com for checking CEL in an 06?

Bumping an old thread here.

I've done plenty of searching, but can't find a conclusive answer. Is it possible to use a Vag-Com cable to pull trouble codes in a 2006 WRX? I'm guessing no, because ecuExplorer doesn't support anything past 2005, but figured it's worth asking.

Thanks.

After some experimentation I found the answer to my own question. In case anyone else is wondering, here it is...

It is possible to use a vagcom cable to pull trouble codes off of a 2006/2007 WRX. To do so perform the following.

1. Ensure that you have setup the vagcom properly and it has a COM port assigned to it
2. Download Learning view
3. Plug vagcom into ODBII port
4. Open Learning View
5. Ensure "Enable DTC Reader" is checked
6. Select the correct COM port and click "Connect"
7. Trouble codes will be displayed under "Memorized DTC(s)"

Got my vag-com on ebay from some china seller for 8 bucks. Finally got around to trying it today and was expecting to encounter at least some problems but I didn't!

Plugged it in, flashed gabedude's stage 1 rom, logged a bit. No errors and no faffing about with problems. Plug and play! Best 8 bucks ever!

If the PCB of the VAG cable look like the BFM one, you should mod it to read flash WRX02 with ecuflash:

So to make sure I understand....if I have a JDM v8 (2003 vintage) "581" ecu in a 2002 USDM WRX that I want to image and reflash, the cable I need is.....

I'm not terribly crazy about paying $$$ for a cable, either. I'd be more likely to build one like our friend Madjax

Thanks for the help, folks!

The cable you need is .... openport 1.3U... for $150 , or the BFM at $40.99 and made the MadMod, or maybe the fake VAG one at $12.00 if I can modify it .

My Ecu is the AG580 , the 581 might be the same.

I think for all the Subaru with the four pins white connector under the dashboard, the BFM cable need to be moded.

What bothers me is that guys like me will pay for a cable from BFM and give them money for a product that did not work on WRX02 (and also on some other sub from this around year).
BFM knows that cable did not work for this car on the pretext that it is a timing issue, then it is wrong and it's a hardware problem ...

Thank you, kind sir. Will the newest openport "2.0" version work? AFAIK, the 1.3 is no longer sold.

That would bother me as well...thanks again.
