Opening in the US on December 9th.

Gary Oldman plays George Smiley so I will see it, but I'm curious how well they can cut it down into movie length.

I think he's going for a certain look:

I downloaded the BBC series a little while ago, and now I don't know if I want to watch it in case it ruins the movie.

More like if the movie ruins the series. TTSS was good stuff. I have it ripped somewhere as well as the followup series.

Saw it the other night. Good film overall. A bit nebulous at first with the lingo and flashbacks and Oldman does a lot of saying nothing, but the atmosphere is great and eventually it all comes together.

It's one of those films that most folks on here won't see or like. In other words, the pacing is slow.

Slow and engrossing like one of his books?

I have to say I've never actually read one of his books. Though I've seen most of the movies (The Constant Gardner, The Tailor of Panama).

I'd say it is engrossing.

I just saw this. I thoroughly enjoyed it for not insulting my intelligence in a hollywood way. There were many subtleties in acting and with certain key scenes that the average person wouldn't understand if he weren't paying attention or impatient with the pacing.

What an extraordinary movie. The plot is engrossing and the cinematography is breathtaking. I have never seen the seventies captured more beautifully through so many mundane and average backgrounds. Oldman is fantastic but really the whole movie is just exquisite.

Great book, bad movie. Sure, the novel you can sit through for endless hours, but the movie tortures you with a plot of Machiavellian twists only your gf or aunt could top.

I'm sure the book is better (they almost always are), but unless you are unable to decipher the meaning of any plot beyond that of a Steven Seagal movie you should be able to enjoy both the story and the cinematography of this film without too much difficulty.

Seriously, even though the seventies sucked you will miss them after watching this film. There is such an odd bit of cold war and period nostalgia about it that you just can't help but be drawn in. It is now one of those movies that I will always watch whenever it is on.
