I don't know who is saying its big, it's a smaller Accent.

It's small, but can fit real people in back. Just takes a bit of folding due to the roof to get in back there.

For many, there is only one problem with the Hyundai Veloster: itís slow. Funky asymmetrical design aside, the interesting new Hyundai product left enthusiasts wanting and so to solve that issue the Korean automaker has unveiled a new turbocharged model today at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
With a twin-scroll turbo mated to a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder output is rated at 201 hp at 6000 rpm and a significant 195 lb-ft of torque at just 1750 rpm. Thatís a serious jump over the standard carís 138 hp and just 123 lb-ft of torque. With that power (and more standard equipment) comes several hundred pounds of extra weight, putting the Veloster Turbo at 2,800 lbs. More than a MINI Cooper S but less than a Civic Si, Hyundai can still boast a better power to weight ratio than either of those cars.
As for fuel economy, the use of direct injection helps deliver a projected 27/38 rating with the six-speed manual. No numbers for the dual-clutch six-speed automatic are yet available.
In the transmission department both a six-speed manual and six-speed dual-clutch automatic are available, with wider gears for the manual, so as to cope with the added power, while the auto-box gets closer gears to help keep it in the ideal power range.
In addition to power Hyundai has also tuned the carís intake and exhaust notes and has firmed up the steering to improve driver feel. The car also looks noticeably sportier thanks to 18-inch wheels and itís quite a lot meaner too, thanks to a large, monotone flat-fronted grille and a complete ground effects kit that ends out back with a large diffuser and two center-exit exhaust pipes. To help the car stand out further are Turbo-exclusive LED daytime running lights, as well as an optional Matte Gray paint Ė the first matte paint finish offered by Hyundai

i am definitely curious as to how matte paint will age with time. when i was in vienna, austria, i saw a bunch of matte black audi's. i'd def get one of those.

This is one souped up car. I mean look at all the details they put into this.
The grille, the hood, door cuts, wide body...
Even the freckin seat saids "Turbo!" This car means business! They may as well slap an STI badge on it too.

Even as questionable as VW general reliability is, I would not say that it is worse than Hyundai with unproven tech/parts. VW may have the windows stop working, a sway bar endlink crap out, or have a cooling fan die, but the engine will keep going. I would still much rather have a turbo VW engine under my hood than a turbo Hyundai. The current GTI engine has been around for a while and is pretty well sorted out and capable of handling a good bit of power with no to minimal upgrades/work.

Don't get me wrong, I like what Hyundai has been doing and am certainly impressed with all the changes they have been making, but I just don't see this as being something all that interesting unless the car is priced below $20,000, without being stripped out. I just don't think they went far enough with this car in regards to performance, which is what this little car is about (so says the styling, "turbo" on the seats, and that they already have a slower, mundane base model for those who don't want a sporty driving experience). Maybe I am just expecting too much.........
If this car starts at 20k, i would consider buying it over a GTI. It would be a tough decision though. I do like the unique look of the car and it weighs less than GTI so performance is probably equal but the Veloster estimated mpg is much higher. Interior looks good, i agree that they shouldn't have put 'turbo' on the seats but not a big deal. I mean it's good to have more choices in this segment right? Small affordable hatchback with decent power and mpg. Don't really like Mini Cooper, too small i think. What else is there? I do like Volvo C30 but also heavy and even worse mpg with similar performance.

****. If this drives nice and stays near 20K, I'm not even going to bother with going to look at the Spark.

Maybe I got the Wheelbase numbers wrong but I saw WRX as 103.1" and the Veloster at 104.3.

It will be just like this color in the 90's.

Plus the flatness will not last long as washing will make areas shiny. I would love a veloster in shiny uber gloss black or red.
Good thing it's not flat then

That might be right. The Veloster looks to have a pretty wide base. They look great in person. I'm extremely impressed with Hyundai and their new directions.

You got the wheelbase numbers right, but that doesn't tell the whole story

Overall length of Veloster is 167.3 in./ WRX hatch 173.8 / WRX Sedan 180.3

Sure it's a fad but you can't blame Hyundai for capitalizing on it. Hey, Vanilla Ice did it, so why not

I have to say, I really like the flat/matte paint and I think it is cool that Hyundai is offering it. Also have to say that despite my earlier comments, the 195 ft/lbs at 1750rpms sounds nice and will probably make for a nice DD experience. I still think they needed a little more HP to set it apart/above similar options in the possible price range. Why not top the segment instead of being competitive?

Because it allows them to come in below a price point and leaves room for another version

Looks pretty good! Love the color. Wonder how much power can be squeezed from that 1.6T though.

You are going to see a lot of similar numbers in the next few years.

I don't mind the numbers, it's a good balance between HP and mileage. I've said before, if the new impreza had a 200 HP engine, like the one in the BRZ as an option, I'd trade in my GC8 in a heartbeat

I just had a Sonata Turbo on loan to me for a road trip and perhaps the numbers on paper aren't impressive but it sure takes off when you put your foot down to pass or from a roll. It is more than fast enough

I also got 33.4mpg (EPA is 34mpg) highway and that was with it loaded up with the family and driving driving at 80mph with a few jaunts to 100. I am also notoriously a mileage killer with my driving so I was surprised

Edit to add: Car and Driver got 0-60 in 6.5 and 1/4 mile at 14.9 @ 97mph. That is not exactly slow for a big sedan that is not meant to be all that sporty
