The 4400 is IN and I'm loving it so far. Big thanks for this thread slowhat, and for SVXdc's harness and SWC!

Both made the whole install process go as smooth as possible. My only eff up was forgetting to put the shrink wrap on 2 of the wires BEFORE I soldered them together -lol. Easy fix tho, I just cut 'em and re did 'em the right way.

As promised, here are a few pics of it installed with the canadian/jdm double din trim piece. And I'm happy to report the trim panel caused zero issues with the motorized screen's movement.

Cheers!

RockyMtnGT- well done, sir!

I added a pic of your set up to the first post to show your dash kit option.
thanks for posting!

what did the dash kit cost?
also, how is the H/U mounted? i'm assuming the CDM/JDM kit has a bracket that connects to the H/U. is it metal or plastic? This may be good info to have in the opening post

thanks!

Thanks guys it looks and works well thanks to your info - haha

I can't belive the difference in sound quality overall. I also adjusted my OEM under seat sub's gain setting up to about 75% of max. It was set to about 35% of max from the dealer - I may want to adjust it back down to 50 or 60% though- still tweaking it)

Together with the new HU it made a huge difference!

This is the part number that matches the 2012 wrx exactly:

66065SC130

It was $69.80 shipped from http://www.subarugenuineparts.com to Colorado.

I *think* you can find it a little cheaper but I have been happy with this vendor on previous purchases.

EDIT: Sorry I meant to add that the trim piece is just the trim piece...no brackets. The old trim piece pulls off, and the new one snaps back on in it's place. I just removed the OEM brackets that were on the stock HU and re-used them to mount the Pioneer.

Reading through and I may have missed...

Has anyone streamed music via BT with this yet? It says it will do it...

how do you like the audio section (EQ,crossover)?

Thanks

It does stream music via BT, I confirmed that the other day. I can't comment much on the audio settings yet because I haven't had a chance to mess around with the custom EQ.

I can definitely second RockyMtnGT's thoughts on the sound quality vs. the OEM HU. I was amazed at just how much the sound changed without adding anything else (ie. component speakers, sub, amp, etc.). There's a lot to be said for an aftermarket HU vs. OEM.

The EQ is decent enough to tweak the sound more to your liking. I am thinking of picking up a mic for the auto EQ function. i think they are like 15 bucks on amazon. reviews say it does a great job making everything sound a bit better.

and I agree with Ying, it really makes the stock speakers sound decent. Although i added my Inifinity Basslink, even with it turned off it sounds really nice.

Well guys, I'm stepping BACK from basically one of the best SQ HU/processor combos ever devised... (Alpine DVA9860/PXA701)

I'm just not the tweaker I thought I was, my car doesn't have A/C, so sitting with the windows up is out of the question and there just aren't any audio comps close enough for me to warrent all the BS that comes with such a gem..

Looking to simplify

Funny - I bought the AutoEQ mic from amazon and got it to work fine with my Avic x930bt last night. It actually did an awesome job IMHO sorting out the EQ/fader/balance settings. I have the Nissan OEM Rockford Fosgate speaker/amp setup in my Xterra and it sounds amazing!

BUT I have been unable to get the 4400 to work with it as of yet. I went through the same steps I did with the AVIC 930, but it pops up and says 'This feature cannot be accessed while the vehicle is moving etc etc'? Even if I am parked in the garage??? Funny because the unit is bypassed and I can successfully watch DVD's/dial phone numbers while driving around so the bypass did work. (NOT that I watch DVD's while driving, I just tested it to be sure the bypass worked.)

I honestly have not read the 4400 instructions on this, so it could very well be my fault. I just tried to do it the exact same way I did with the x930.

The 4400 however needs to lower the screen so you can plug the mic in, but I can't get it past that 'warning' to actually lower the screen for me(yet)

I will mess with it some more tonight to see if I can get it to work.

Interesting. I wonder if the brake video bypass interferes with the auto-EQ- microphone setup? I have that brake bypass thing ordered and wating for it before I install my 3300BT. I was going to get that microphone after I get everything installed. I wonder if it won't work with the bypass though.

Is this the same bypass you have?

It's funny it seems like the car thinks it is moving when it is not, opposite of what you'd think the bypass does. But Like I said this could my error...I Need to read the instructions. hehe

Here's the problem: When using the auto EQ feature, the HU shuts off its amp remote turn-on lead. So your bypass relay or device shuts off too.

You'll need to add a manual override switch to make it look like a real parking brake is connected. I'm fairly sure it would be safe to wire that in parallel with the bypass device (so your switch connects the HU's parking brake lead directly to ground). The switch can be a simple 2-terminal (SPST, on/off) type.

Ah ha! Thanks for the info! Hmm I dunno if I'm motivated enough to pull it out and wire in a switch just yet- lol.

Maybe I just won't get the auto-EQ mic. I hope that brake overide doesn't interfere with the amplifier under normal circumstances, as I'm hooking up all my door speakers and a subwoofer to an amp!

And why would it shut the amp remote lead off anyway? That makes no sense.

I agree, but that's what someone else discovered. Perhaps during auto EQ mode the HU doesn't turn it on until after the point where it checked for the parking brake? Just guessing, but maybe it runs a test with the amp shut off, to ensure it's hearing the quiet state?

Quite possible, why run an auto eq with a mic while on the move, wouldn't work...

If it was really smart it would always have that mic on and use it to actively cancel out road noise. [/offtopic]

and it would cost 5-10x...

Killing road noise isn't as simple as micing the car and producing a signal 180* out of phase... it's got to have a system that can devote enough dynamics continously, to KILL the noise... so say anywhere from 40-80db of output power.. dedicated to that...

not as easy as a simple algorythm... not a plug n play...

jus sayin..

I was debating between the 3400 and 4400 and ended up buying the 4400 for $435! I can't believe how much difference the new headunit makes compared to the stock one.

I also installed the headunit with JDM bezel and I'm waiting on the Metra Axxess ASWC to come in from SVXdc. Should be good to go after that.

That looks awesome! So much nicer than those little trim pieces on each side of the HU with a typical dash kit.

Edit: Now that these HU's can be had for the low $400's, I can justify buying the JDM AV trim piece.

Yeah, you pretty much turned your factory radio into an aftermarket, without all of the bennies of the aftermarket options.. .

Quote:
Many factory stereos use built-in equalization designed to make cheap factory speakers sound better, but this dressed-up signal can prevent aftermarket speakers from living up to their potential. The CleanSweep uses a 32-bit digital signal processor to remove the factory adjustments, then sends your external amplifiers a perfectly clean signal.
So you just spent 300$ to make your stereo sound "normal"....

I have heard some bad comments about "cleansweep". Like DON'T do it.
