Default 08 STI lots of blow by but passes compression and leakdown test.

Hi guys, have an 08 sti. Subaru had to replace 2 pistons a few months ago because of ring land failure, now its back at the shop again with the exact same symtoms however its passing both leakdown and compression test.

Ideas?

AP had some knock in #4, DAM goes up and down.

What are the actual numbers of the compression and leakdown test? Dont let the shop say "oh, it passed" because their tolerances and what tolerances should be dont quite line up.

Also, I assume they replaced more than just pistons for a ringland failure??

Nope just pistons. (Was done at a different dealership) I have a good friend who manages this facility and I've talked with the mechanics personally and driven with them in the car, no reason they would bull**** me, it would be more money to them if they could replace the bottom end for me!

I'll get the exact numbers for you. Off the top of my head they said leakdown was between 0.5 and 1.5psi over 15 minutes.

I'll get further details. SOA has asked them to pull the exhaust and check out the turbo for excess play and wastegate cracks. They think it may have a seal leak which is causing pressure to get into the crank case causing excessive blow by.

Find out later. Any further ideas? This car is ridiculous lol.

If you have reason to believe they aren't just brushing you off with the comp/LD results, turbo shaft play is probably the culprit.

I personally lose 1QT every 5500 miles using RT6 and I know it's all going into the intake/TMIC. A Crawford AOS will remedy mine most likely.

i agree with b1aze. oil seal in the turbo... pull the y pipe off and check the compressor side for oil. if so it may be worth looking at. its hard to gauge how much oil is leaking until you just replace it.

Gunked up pcv valve? I know it's dumb but if its like the pcv valve off my impreza, it takes <10 to check.

Your problem seems bigger than just a pcv valve though. But it can't hurt to check right?

Edit: Didn't see the "lots of" part, haha. I know they can cause some blow by but I'm not sure about a lot of it. How much do you mean by a lot?

Another edit: Forgot I ventured into the turbo forum, and I don't know too much about the turbo motors.
I'm going to stop now.
:/ :/ :/

Hey guys. Update!

Subaru checked the turbo and it was entirely worn out, both oil seals are leaking and the shaft has lots of play. They are also thinking the up pipe on the car is clogged or becoming clogged.

They also think when the other dealership rebuild half the motor they didn't clean the chunks of metal out properly and it got into the turbo and destroyed it.

Oh well, Its all under warranty and they are replacing the parts tomorrow/wednesday and we will go from there. Subaru has a lot of money into fixing this thing.

The turbo oil seals were bad, replaced that.. No more smoke but still massive loss in power and DAM going to 0 despite no sensors showing bad.

Subaru has sent out an engineer to try and figure out whats wrong with the car... Dealership said this may end up as a buy back or replacement. I'd be happy to get a newer STI.
