Seeing as how Subaru can't seem to fix major problems like James Wilson is having, I highly doubt they're going to do anything about that plastic steering column cover/shroud. I've been actively complaining to my dealer and SOA about a few issues, and all they do is blow smoke up yer butt.
They will likely tell you "theyre all like that" or " we havent had any other complaints".
If they do.find a fix please post it as I'd love to not have a loosely fitted piece of plastc flopping around on the column. But I'm afraid thats what we are stuck with. I'm also stuck with a loud sqeaky seat spring and doors that act as humidors.

You can move the cover around yourself to position it a little bit better. It is really held onto a bracket with two screws on the front.

Yep, I was. Bought it the end of Feb. last year and got rid of it at the end of July. I miss that car so much and was going to order another one, but didn't want to spend that much this time around.

I love my Impreza, but there is just something about the OB I miss.

Thanks for the tip! I'll have to try that. I can move it around and see the illumination light, but when I take my hand off, it just goes back to it's previous position.

I've had the car 2 weeks today and have about 215 miles on it. So far that's the only thing wrong I've found with the car. If that's the only thing that is/goes wrong, I'm a very happy(even though I'm very happy with it now!) camper.

thanks for the tip. i saw the two screws today...looks like you have to turn the steering wheel 90 degrees to access them. after those are out, do the two halves come apart easily (i assume they are sort of fitted together with some sort of clip/lock?

for whatever reason, my rattle has gone away with the return of sunshine here. it makes me wonder if i've misidentified the location of this rattle/creak. it could it be something else like the windshield or something that would be more adversely affected by the outside temp? (i say this from my experience with my honda's hard to find rattle actually being an outside trim which they eventually found was expanding and contracting during heating/cooling.

yet, your info is helpful. i'm not too concerned about the ignition misalignment, but i had thought that perhaps there was some sort of harnass in the steering column that was vibrating or moving around when going over bumps.

oh...i was asking so i could ascertain when the car was painted. i have heard conflicting info on whether the paint is precured at the factory, etc. i just wanted to be safe in terms of whether i could wax the car or not yet. i decided it was good enough, and i waxed the car this morning.

That 's too bad. I have a early 10, built in June of 09 it had alot of issues the first 15 months but now it's ok. I was leasing a 11 base Legacy and while it was a decent car it was very boring. Even though it is based off the OB it feeels like a different car. My Impreza sport is much better and to my surprise rides smoother and handles much better . Overall a nicer interior too.

For owners of the '12, what's your opinion on the paint quality? Haven't heard any complaints...

I had a vibration around 60mph(not the shaking problem) and I had to take it back to the dealer 5 times for the final fix. To subaru's and the dealers credit, they never once turned me away and they even tried something that I thought would fix it. It finally was fixed though. People ask me why I went back to a subaru even after the issues I had with that car and the amount of times I had to take it back. I work at a dealership and I know how to treat people and what good customer service is. Subaru and the dealer both provided me with that, plus I love the cars. They are very comfortable for me and a comfortable seat is a big thing I look for in a car. Subaru has me a customer for as long as they continue to make a great product.

I have an Impreza Limited and while I find the ride very smooth, I think the OB was smoother and had a more controlled ride. When hitting bumps or waves in the road, I feel them more in the Impreza. I attribute that to smaller wheelbase. Handling is definitely bette than the OB. Without the rear sway bar I always thought like I was going to go out the other door when I made a turn.

The second gen CVT is light years better than the one in my OB.

The paint is excellent with a lot of metallic in it and a deep shine. My only complaint is that there is a lot of orange peel in it. As a detailer, it bothers me. No one else would probably notice it though

The 2nd gen CVT does have a smoother less rubber band feel. I still say the Impreza has a better overall suspension than the OB/Legacy due to overall subframe stiffness and more compliant bushings. The BRZ uses the front struts and the EPS from the PREZ. No wet noodle feel from this chassis IMO.

The paint job on the new Imprezas is ok, but thr US-built Subarus have a much better finish imo.

Definitely agree with you on that.

hemophilic: Since you have MBP(I'm assuming since it says blue), it may be harder to tell. Look down the side of your car and the paint will look like the skin of an orange hence the term orange peel. If I remember I'll take a pic of my car tomorrow so you can see what I'm talking about.

I'd say the CVT in the Impreza is almost flawless compared to the OB. When I shifted to park, I'd get a clunk. Dropping past 20mph there was a clunk as well. This CVT is definitely a huge improvement.

Default one thing that still annoys me: speedometer...

i've only had the car a week and a half, so maybe i'll i adapt soon, but am i the only one who dislikes how the speedometer is broken into 2.5 mph increments?

i would have much preferred either 1 mph increments (as small as they might be) or just 5 mph increments.

so far, i need to do a 'double take' to figure out what speed i'm going.

i don't think i've ever driven a car with this gradation for the speed...

I always look at my Garmin to tell me my actual speed.

the CVT is slowly growing on me. (this is from someone who has been driving 5spd for 20+ years prior to buying this car)

the only thing i can really complain about is the lag in going from reverse to drive. i'm sure i'll get used to it, but i find that mildly annoying.

I'm with you! It drives me batty. Harder to read than a thermometer! Digital would have been best, IMHO. Who wants to have to think "OK, two and a half spaces means five mph." I didn't notice how awful it really was/is until I started to use cruise control.

Today I broke the 1k marker after 2 weeks of ownership. Coming from an S2000, it was hard to resist the temptation of slamming the gas petal. On my S2000 it was a rocket from 0-100. First gear was pleasantly not so bad and mid range was pretty good. The car shifted to second before the tach reached redline. When the car got into second I thought "what the hell". It felt like the car fell on it face. Just wow. I got to keep that in mind, 0-40 not so bad. 40-60 wow don't. Lol oh well the impreza has about 130 less horsepower than my S2000. I didn't buy this car for its exceptional sportiness. Living with the S2000 two door convertible with no trunk as a daily driver for almost 6 years makes you appreciate the practicality of this car, the gas milage, the space, and the lack of worrying of the oh-crap-it-is-raining-my-car-is-going-to-hydrolock issue.

I noticed this a couple days into the car! I actually had to sit there and figure it out for a minute to see how it was set up. I have no idea why subaru opted to do this kind of speedo.

I noticed that lag seems to be more noticeable when the car is colder. When I leave for work in the morning and back out of the driveway(car is in the garage) and when I'm leaving work it's especially noticeable, but I guess I'm just used to it from having my OB.

how many people have upgraded their Rear swaybar to the STI one? anyone gone bigger, like the 22mm or even 25mm aftermarket upgrade?

how about the front, anyone check those out yet for upgrades?
