Default KW Variant 3 Clunking

I just installed the KW Variant 3 and the rears, They clunk the hell outta me when they go pass any bumps. I have tried to find out exactly where did it came from but still I couldnt find it.

Does anybody have any idea where is that clunking coming from?

I would first suspect top mounts. Check for oil leaking where the chrome shaft sticks out of the shock. Sometimes KW's crack where they bolt to the upright, check for oil around the bottom of the shock.
Good luck.

And there's no leaking or whatsoever. Checked everything already. Also I forgot to mention, the previous stock suspension too clunked but it wasn't as loud as this. As you people know, kw came without top mount and u had to reuse it. Does it have anything to do with it?

They are tightened all the way down. I'm very sure of that.

If it clunked before, why would you blame the KW coilovers?

i think what he's getting at is that maybe it wasn't the shocks that clunked and something else in the suspension

I know how to read just fine.
Again, if it clunked before, what makes you think it's the coilovers?

Have you went over other pieces of your suspension? How do you know your installation didn't exacerbate the issue further?

You're obviously asking because you don't know.

I actually could suggest a few things right now, but I don't feel like it anymore.

Then too bad you don't have to. Obviously I have checked everything possible. Bolts on sway bar everything but it's ok. I just wanted to ask but no worries. There's nothing unsolvable in this world with mr green bills.

Thanks for your time and don't bother to reply. I will pay a visit with the shop soon with mr green bills. Let's see if I need your "advise" or not again.

How low are you? Is there enough preload on the springs?

ok certified KW Variant 3 to be a complete bull****. im gonna throw this garbage away once i get a replacement coils.

apparently no matter what we do, the clunk is there. we even removed all of the sway bars to test it to see if thats the problem but hell no. the problem lies with the coilovers itself.

we tried so many top hats to test it.. cusco ones, oem sti ones, group n all of them were giving out this bull**** noise. i can say accurately that i have spent more time on this piece of garbage over other coilovers that i've owned before. even taiwan made coilovers didnt give me this kinda bull**** clunk. im done with this..

nope it's not the preload. i know the ride height you set it for affects preload. I have kw's recommended height range right now and nothing seems to work.

Where in Japan are you? I've had 4 sets of KWs now, never a clunk when installed properly. All of the top hats you tried were new? What nut are you using for the top? How are you tightening the nut for the top hat? I've used them with stock and CUSCO top hats, neither to make a clunk.

I get this feeling because you have an 04STI that your rear wheel bearings are worn...

Okay, just sayin because most people complain about coilovers clunking because they didn't preload correctly and/or they don't know how to properly preload that model

I'm in Tokyo. The first top hat i used were used from my Arai suspension. Then I went to buy the cusco ones and the sound is still there, then i went to car do tachikawa and bought a oem sti top hat and a group n top hat brand new.

We used a strap wrench as recommended by Tom Edge from KW. tried 2 torque specs, which is 26lbs and 41lbs and nope nothing is working. Tried removing the sway bars , retorque the end links and nope nothing is working.

Also, the rear wheels bearing were done when I went for my last inspection. Changed all of the wheel bearings and it's not even 100miles. So I don't think its a problem with the bearings.

I have spent well over 8hrs per day x 3 day worth of labour with the parts purchased and it gets on me really alot to see that nothing is working..

Im sorry for venting but hope you people can understand that, after spending 2.4k on these coilovers and almost $800 on the brand new top hats and $75x8x3= 1.8k on labour for 3 days to figure out this problem. I don't really feel like continuing rectifying this problem no more especially after spending 5.8k on these coilovers alone..

thanks for your advice anyway. this is not my first set of coilovers so most of the reasons for clunk has been went thru by me already.

I've had 2 sets of KWs and never a clunking issue. Maybe you just got a bad set, or you have some other issue you haven't found yet.
