Legacy EJ20Gs are the oldest and can be identified by 2 bolts holding each coil down vs. only one bolt on Impreza versions.

Single bolt. But I have old style cam/crank sensors vs my last EJ20G which had cam/crank sensors like my 99 EJ253.

If it's single bolt then the early ('96 or '97) Legacy EJ25D stuff should work. Might need to figure out if it's the same as '96 or '97-'99 - if there is even a difference.

Do those sources also hold true for timing belt, component kits, tensioner, water pump, etc?

Timing set, yes.
Water pump, no. If you have the oil cooler use a USDM WRX pump ('02 is fine). If you don't have the cooler use a '92-'94 Legacy TURBO pump. |

Correct me if i'm wrong, but he can only use the belt & idlers off the EJ25D, I'm fairly certain the tensioner on the EJ25D is the newer style, whereas the EJ20G uses an EJ18 tensioner. Also don't think cam/crank seals will work from EJ25D?

As far as I know (and I am just basing this off what the parts manager at local dealership said) all the cam and crank seals should be the same across the entire ej series line.

Correct, you need to match your tensioner. EJ25Ds have been built with both new and old style and there is no clear line for the changeover.
IIRC, cam seals should be the same across all the phase 1 DOHC heads. Front crank seal is part of the oil pump and has never changed as far as I have seen. |

you can convert easily from one style tensioner to the other, personally i always prefer the newer rocker style. just source the backing/mounting plate that goes with the later tensioner.
