I recently purchased an 06 Tribeca. Just wondering what type of viscocity I should use 10w30 or 5w30. The car has always used conventional but I was thinking about switching to Synthetic. Car has 75k. I looked through the maintence manual but it does not say what type should be used. Any suggestions would help. Thanks.

I have been reading about types of oil for vehicles with 75,000 or more miles. What I have seen suggests not changing viscosity but moving to those oils specifically produced for your level of mileage. Most manufacturers have a higher mileage oil designed for your needs. They do not recommend synthetic at this point in the life of a vehicle.

So, please pay attention.
You switch to synthetic, it is all good. What kind of environment you live in? It is cold, it is hot, etc.? How many times per day you start the car? Are you doing your own oil change or you go to the shop? What is your interval, like 3000 miles maybe 5000 miles? If yow switch to synthetic and you have a leak it will make it worse. If not, any 5w or even 0w will do the trick for you. HTH, George |

* Car with mileage of at least 25% of the planned resource engine (new engine) must be used motor oils of classes SAE 5W30 or 10W30 multigrade;
* Car with mileage of 25-75% of the planned resource engine (technically defective engine) are useful in the summer of motor oils of classes SAE 10W40, 15W40, 5W30 and 10W30 in the winter and all seasons - SAE 5W40; * Car with mileage of more than 75% of the planned resource engine (old engine) should be used in the summer of motor oil grades SAE 15W40 and 20W40, winter - motor oils of classes SAE 5W40 and SAE 10W40, and all seasons - motor oil grade SAE 5W40. |
