Default getting a swapped car legalized...

Hey Guys,

Not sure if this is the right place for this thread...

swapped a 2006 2.5i to a wrx last year; cats and everything smog wise should be legal.

Just wondering if anyone has some info on getting it barred and legalized.

Thanks

You can't register it as a WRX, because it's still legally a 2.5i according to the VIN number.

Right on. I figured as much. is there anything I can do to legally drive it on the road when it's registration time?

the reason I ask is there is two recalls on my car: both are emissions related one is a recall for the 2.5i motor only. they wont give me my new stickers till the recalls are taken care of

moved to baic since the rest of the states, it's an easy process, but from what I gather, CA makes you do flying leaps through flaming monkey bars.

look at the dmv's web site. I recall you'll have to get inspected by a smog referee.

I have NEVER seen DMV hold registration for a recall.

To get the swap legalized, you will need to go to the BAR.

You will not change the car from a 2.5i to a WRX. It will have a sticker that says you have an engine swap in your 2.5i. This should be relatively easy since there is no dyno test. They will connect the OBD connector, check for codes and readiness, then do the two step no load test.

What happens if you pass? You get a sticker just like the one I got for my other car. If you did the swap right, it is easy and you are done quick. If you screwed around or hacked anything, you will spend lots of time. You can get the BAR sticker with legal bolt on parts too. I had intake, header, exhaust, and ignition system when I had mine approved.

As long as the cats are OEM you will be fine, if not you will be S.O.L.,

Nor have I. Get a printout from DMV stating what it is that is holding up registration, those clerks are 9/10ths talking heads. If they cannot produce paperwork stating what 'recall' technicality is holding up registration then it's not a fact. Just a moron talking.

Find your local BAR/Referee station. Ask solid questions and state what you have done, be honest but be weary. Do not hand over your paperwork right away, some techs can be difficult than others, "You don't have the correct 710 cap." difficult. Check with the local community college, if they have a decent automotive program they may have a BAR/Ref station on campus.

Do you work for the DMV?
In the state of CA replacement(aftermarket) catalysts are acceptable if they meet the CARB guidelines, and are not part of the recent rescinded list posted Jan 10, 2012.

You cannot backdate the engine to a new shell. It had better meet the specifications of recent WRX

bump, wanted to give you guys an update, cause I need some help on what to do lol

So I went to get the car legalized yesterday, and the State Referee examined the car. the car passed a visual, and passed a smog.

He wouldnt give me a certificate to get registration because he said "there are 3 monitors on my ECU that need setting first."

Does anyone know what the hell he's talking about?

how do I set monitors?

Go drive the car around. He is talking about readiness monitors. The car usually needs around 50 miles or 10 drive cycles or so to get everything checked off.

Go for combined driving cycles, go local to drive around and buy a drink and snacks. Then go drive around the freeway and look at cows. Make sure you shut off the engine at destinations and restart it. And lastly, go buy gas and fill it up. You should be able to get enough cycles in that way to get everything ready. If the CEL comes on, DO NOT reset it. You need to fix it.

You are close, very close.

Yeah it's just notifications in the ECU. Get a temp reg if you can and drive the snot out of it for a couple days. Take it back. Should be good to go.

The process for doing this isn't really too bad if you're doing it with stock parts and a newer motor and the work doesn't suck.

The people that have issues are the ones putting older motors in their car or going ape crap on them and trying to get them to fly with illegal parts in them. BAR isn't too bad for your type of swap.
