Default Blown Early EJ20G -- Need Quick Advice on Swap Options

Morning Guys,

After 2.5years of abuse the motor has finally called it quits. started blowing oil smoke out of every exhaust/intake, did a comp test and left side closest to firewall cylinder can barely hold 20psi of compression. the plug was *soaked* in oil so I'm assuming cracked piston... any idea what the cause could be? running meth + FMIC on 94octane @ 18psi...

It's my DD so I need to have this car running ASAP. I tried my best to search but I couldn't find exactly what I'm looking for so thank you in advance for helping this poor kid out.

Car: '94 JDM WRX w/ EJ20G + 550 rob's tune + custom fuel/PS/intake plumbing + coil conversion

My plan is to grab a complete early EJ20K or EJ22T (both readily available in my area), use the longblock but put my current EJ20G intake manifold since it has all the custom work and it would make the swap a lot easier. However, looking online I can't tell if the EJ20K has the staggered bolt pattern on the intake mani or the in-line (my EJ20G is staggered).

If the bolt pattern is different -- Can I keep my current coil-on-plug setup or do I have to do some sort of conversion to the coil-pack style of the EJ20K? What about the idle controller/TB?

Lastly, if I find a 22T will the extra displacement mess with the tune or should I be OK?

my goal is cheapest and quickest swap. ideally everything is plug and play

Again, thank you for the advice, I really appreciate it.

The EJ20G and the EJ20K should both have the straight/in-line intake manifold bolt pattern. The EJ22T is an SOHC motor and should have the staggered pattern. Your DOHC heads on the EJ22T block has been done, but the compression ratio is noticably lower with that combo.

If you reduce your boost a tad (just to keep it safe with changing variables), an early EJ20G, EJ20K, late EJ20G, or the EJ20H and EJ20R twin turbo motors should all work if you plan on using your manifolds.

IIRC, you may need to slightly modify your WRX coils for some of the different heads. I just don't know which ones.

Thanks RCT,

My first car was a Colt with a swapped 4G63T + EVOIIIB16G. Hellllllooo wheel spin!

For the sake of time and ease I don't plan on splitting the longblock, I'll just make sure whatever I grab has the staggered pattern (my EJ20G turbo does?) and I will make sure the thread for each coil is in the right place.

If I have those two things in order I should be OK to use my existing harness/coils/intake manifold (and accompanying sensors/TB) regardless of what the block ends up being?

Apologies for the newb questions but the car, the engine warehouse, and my house are all 100km apart so comparing/investigating/sizing are extremely difficult.

Thanks again,
