Default Toyota to revive Supra nameplate?

Quote:
http://www.leftlanenews.com/toyota-t...nameplate.html

Earlier this month, Toyota applied to renew its long-expired trademark on the Supra name in the United States. Although the company is mostly mum on the subject, an easy-to-reach conclusion would suggest that Toyota could revive the historic badge for its upcoming FT-86 sports car.
Toyota apparently let the Supra trademark expire in 2006 and the automaker never bothered to renew one of its best-known nameplates until earlier this month. According to Car and Driver, Toyota filed an application to take ownership of the Supra name on July 16 with the U.S. Patent and Trademark office.

The magazine did talk with Toyota communication VP Mike Michels, who said that the automaker registered the name “provisionally” in an effort to preserve ownership of the historic name. This is hardly uncommon among automakers who hold onto model name trademarks long after discontinuing a line, although Toyota’s decision certainly comes at a unique time

maybe toyota is going back to their roots and instead of the supra being a separate model, it will become the top of the line FT-86. This is how it was before the mk3 supra. think better suspension, sti engine, and a more aggressive body kit

Default Toyota Supra Successor Back in the Pipeline

Quote:
As the Supra, Celica, and MR-S (MR2) progressively disappeared over the last decade, so too did the excitement from Toyota's lineup. But sports cars are back in the Japanese giant's product plan, led by the Lexus LFA and the new Scion FR-S, which is just about to hit showroom floors. And now it appears the green lamp is finally about to be lit on a long-awaited Supra successor.

The GRMN MRS prototype
Several years ago, Toyota's U.S.-based product planners pitched a new hybrid sports car with looks, power, and environmental credentials. Unveiled at the 2007 Detroit auto show as the FT-HS, the concept reportedly pointed the way toward a reinterpretation of the Supra.
The financial crisis of 2008 prevented the FT-HS from becoming anything more than an attractive concept. But the spirit of that coupe survived and is reportedly being channeled into the design of the on-again, off-again, on-again Supra project. The edges and sharp angles you see in the attached illustration at top are how one artist interprets the direction Toyota is believed to be heading with its new sports car.

The car's final body is expected to be dropped onto the chassis of the GRMN MRS prototype, which has already undergone testing at Fuji Speedway. GRMN stands for Gazoo Racing Meister of Nurburgring, and was named after Nurburgring expert Hiromu Naruse, Toyota's late godfather of sports car development.
Unlike the rear-drive FT-HS, the new sports coupe (it's unlikely to be called Supra) would employ an all-wheel-drive system and generate upwards of 400 horsepower. The car is rumored to feature a mid-engine-mounted, 3.5-liter V-6 hybrid setup mated to a CVT lifted from the new Lexus RX, but tuned for higher performance. The engine would drive the rear wheels, while in-wheel electric motors would power the fronts. GRMN's expertise would be utilized to help develop the car.

The million-dollar question is when we'll see it in production. It's no secret that company CEO Akio Toyoda -- weekend racer, sports car addict, and the driving force behind bringing the extravagantly priced LFA to market -- is enthusiastic about a Supra successor. Toyota bosses haven't officially approved the project, but if Toyoda has his way and the economy shows continued signs of recovery, the new coupe could be on showroom floors by late 2015 for less than $60,000.

Most likely true, especially when the next (if it ever comes out) NSX will be a hybrid sports car and the fact that Toyota is the hybrid king.

Wide body 350hp FRS/BRZ and you have a new Supra. I bet they do try to make it some hybrid halo car to compete with the NSX. Hopefully they don’t do what they did with the LFA and make it 2.5 as expensive as it should be.

Y'know, like the recent Nissan 200SX thread, I just feel unfortunately like I've seen this article way too many times over the past 10 years or so to give it any credence...

Call me when they are green lighting a production ready concept that's actually been caught testing, rather than saying it'll be maybe based off a race team MR-S. Slow news day...

It funny that out of the almost 20 years the Supra was made the only one many people care about was the last one that no one bought when it was actually made.

Very true. Because after fast and the furious, everyone wanted one.

I remember seeing a 1998 model at the NY auto show my dad took me to and always wanted one. I still remember the price tag was around $50k.

and people say the GTR is expensive. The Supra, RX7, 300zx, 3000GT were expensive cars in those days.

Once you adjust for inflation, it wouldn't surprise me if many of the "GT" cars were priced in GTR territory.

A 1994 base model Supra Turbo would be about $62,000 in today's dollars. With options over $74,000.

U gots good math skills.

My dad wanted an MK4 Supra when they were released, after he fell in love with his turbo 3rd gen Supra.
But in Canada they were stickering for close to $60g. They were rare, expensive, and sexy. But at the time it was far too much money for most enthusiasts.

I think lots of people wanted one after playing The Need for Speed game on their PCs back in 1994... but nobody wanted to pay $38k for one in 1994.

The Mark IV Supra is the poster child for cars pricing themselves out of their own markets.

For reference, that's $45,000 in 2010 US Dollars for a 276hp Japanese car. You could buy a 275hp 25th Anniversary Trans-Am for $23,500 ($34,200 in 2010) if you wanted a muscle car.

I can see the Supra name return as a trim level, just like the original.
