Post NASIOC 50-100mph List

What is this?

This post is meant to contain a list of 50-100mph times posted by NASIOC users. The times should be accompanied by basic info about the vehicle (modifications, fuel, weight, etc). A tandard format will be described below to allow for easy comparison. These times can be used as a benchmark for comparing the impact of modifications, acceleration at given power levels, and/or 1/4 mile times.

Why 50-100mph?

On other forums (namely 6speedonline) the 60-130mph time is used as a benchmark. This range is used instead of 1/4 mile times and speeds because the 1/4 mile is highly dependent on track conditions and launch. 60-130mph is sufficiently fast enough to avoid launch/traction differences in most cases. But, after some consideration it was determined that 60-130mph was not practical for many Subaru's. It was chosen to use the 50-100mph range.

This range is fast enough that traction is not an issue on most AWD cars and the top end is not too difficult to reach (similar to a normal road tuning log or trap speed for a near-stock car). This range should not cause issues (due to traction) on most Subaru's, and the top speed is such that it is accessible for even stock cars quite easily.

Why not post dyno numbers or 1/4 mile times?

We do already have a similar list for "Road Dyno" numbers. This is based on the Airboy spreadsheets and is a valuable resource. This info is still very useful, in fact for many things it is much more useful than 50-100mph times (like looking at powerbands, etc), but it does have a few downfalls. First is that the numbers are highly dependent on user inputs. If you have a highly modified vehicle, this becomes difficult. Even something as simple as entering vehicle weight incorrectly can skew the numbers.

The next main issue is that a dyno number doesn't directly correlate to how quick your car is (as compared to someone else's). Making more power doesn't mean your car will accelerate more quickly. Gearing, weight, aerodynamics, etc all come into play. Having an actual time is much easier to compare, and is more of a "real world" result. This also means that a 50-100mph time is something that can be compared across not only different Subaru models, but across other platforms as well (so feel free to post results from other vehicles!).

What do I need to do?

When you do the run, you can basically do anything you want to get from 50-100mph as fast as possible: use whatever gears you'd like, brake boost, start slower and go WOT through 50mph, etc. As long as you are on a flat surface it is OK. To get on the list, you need some way to confirm the time. The best ways to do this are with a data log, a video of the speedometer, or best yet a VBOX or similar device. Please post one of those things as proof, and then fill out the following information, using the formatting described below. Once all of that is in place, I will update your time onto the master list.

What is the format?

Two sets of info need to be posted. The first is a single line for use in the overall list. The second is a summary of your modifications that will stay in your post and people can review.

Here is the format for the single line of info. You can use the code tags if you want, otherwise just enter the data in a line and I can do the formatting when I update the list. Please write "NA" if you don't have that piece of info. For induction, please list what turbo you are using. (Code tags purposely broken to make it easier to copy/paste.)

[code]Username Year Vehicle Make Vehicle Model Price Lbs L Cyl Induction Boost Fuel HP TQ 1/4 ET 1/4MPH 0-60 0-100 50-100[code]

Here's an example:

What times do other types of cars do?

Here is a list of some cars that I pulled from Road and Track's testing (they are all stock/unmodified). It is sorted by 50-100mph time (fastest to slowest).

Clearly these are pulls through 50mph, starting for the most part in 2nd gear at about 40mph. I think this is the best way, as it is difficult to obtain accuracy from a "standing" speed.

For instance, I have timed 60-90 on my wrx several times, starting at 60mph, and have obtained times from 3.4 sec to 3.9 seconds in consecutive sets of pulls. Who knows if I was starting right at 60 each time, or if my stopwatch was used accurately?

Pulling through 60 is noticeably faster, although with still inconsistent times due to using a stopwatch. Just wanted to clarify the rules here before I add my data.

We need vboxes and the vbox data for this to be legitimately competitive and to obtain true "bragging" rights. Or at least we all need a gtech or all use cobbs accessport if it supports that(not positive, but I think it does...)

Also, we need a to say on our posts if this was on flat ground, incline, or decline.

So what do we need to do? floor it at 50mph or start lower and run the stopwatch from 50-100?
20g on a 2 liter with 6spd doesn't like being floored from 50... lol

I think a log and video will suffice, not everyone has a Vbox. The inclination will introduce some error but it shouldn't be huge.

From my understanding floor it when ever you want. The point of this list is to see who is faster from 50-100mph; there fore who has the better power to weight ratio/ who is the fastest .

Actually I did. I was assuming starting at 50 was the way to do it until you mentioned pulling through 50. I just wanted to clarify before attempting it... lol

I agree. A video or log isn't going to be perfect. VBOX would be ideal. BUT I wanted to make this as accessible as possible, so I'm fine with accepting videos and logs. If anything, they aren't any less accurate than all the Airboy/Virtual Dyno posts out there, because that is based off log data as well.

All runs should be done on flat ground. If you want to cheat and do it down a hill I guess no one will be able to stop you, but that's not really the point.

Here's what I posted when I originally did this.

Quote:
I did it from a 30mph roll so my turbo was spooled up when I hit 50mph. Some might not agree with this, but I think it's the most consistent way. Basically just get from 50-100mph as fast as possible: use whatever gears you'd like, brake boost, start slower and go WOT through 50mph, etc. Just keep it to a flat surface and you're good.
I'll add a comment about this to the original post. Can't wait to see some more results!

Not trying to be a downer but this seems like more of a FWD car thing. As most Subarus don't struggle with traction issues. It will be fun to see where they rank against RWD & FWD though.

I will vbox the XTi tomorrow and log it so we can see the difference. I think it will be pretty off from other small comparisons I have done.

Traction from a roll usually isn't a problem but launching is a big variable that can throw off 1/4 mile times. I see 60' times that are 1.6 or better and some that are over 2 seconds. That difference would result in over a second difference in 1/4 mile. Another purpose was to make it quick and easy to do. For some people getting a 1/4 mile run can be a bit of a hassle.

Looking forward to seeing how it looks. I sure it will be fast!

I think so too. Video would be fun.

This might not be perfect but I think it could be interesting and is hopefully easy enough that many people will try it.

Not everyone likes to go to the track or can afford breaking stuff all the time. This is a perfect way to you who has the best power to weight ratio AKA who is the fastest.

IMO a video is better than the log. The logging rate is not perfect plus fast polling introduces a lot of error.

Here is my vid and my log. The video has one run starting from 3rd and the other one starting from second. I short shifted 3rd on the first run. My log is from my second run, you can see that I am only running 22psi and I am running rich.
