Rossi handed Barcelona practice opportunity

Caterham test driver Alexander Rossi will become the first American to participate in a Grand Prix weekend in almost five years when he replaces Heikki Kovalainen in next Friday’s opening practice session in Spain.

Rossi, a veteran of single-seater series including GP2 and GP3, made his last F1 appearance for the team in November’s young driver test in Abu Dhabi and this year is competing in Formula Renault 3.5 with the Arden Caterham squad.

"I am looking forward to getting back into the F1 car in Spain and I want to thank the team for the chance to run in FP1 in Barcelona,” said the 20-year-old Californian. “I have a clear goal for the session - make sure I run to the plan set by the engineers, not make any mistakes and learn as much as I can over the whole weekend.

“I know how much I will be able to take from my time with the team back to my Formula Renault 3.5 commitments and I know the team will do everything they can to help me maximise my performance on Friday."

Caterham technical director, Mark Smith, added: “We are all looking forward to giving Alexander the chance to work with us at a full race weekend. He did a good job in Abu Dhabi when we ran him in the young driver test in 2011 and I am sure he will perform well for us on Friday in Spain."

Rossi took up his official Caterham test role in March, making him the first American F1 driver since Scott Speed left Toro Rosso midway through the 2007 season.

Awesome. Hope he does well. I don't think it will be too long before we have another full time American driver.

holy crap. how did i not know about this?!

Quote:
CVC Capital Partners Ltd. added Morgan Stanley (MS) (MS) and UBS AG (UBSN) to help with the initial public offering of Formula One, which could raise as much as $3 billion in Singapore, said two people with knowledge of the matter.

The two banks join Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS) (GS), hired earlier for the stock sale, as lead managers for the IPO, said the people, who declined to be identified because the process is private. DBS Group Holdings Ltd. (DBS), CIMB Group Holdings Bhd (CIMB) and Banco Santander SA (SAN) have also been retained to help manage the IPO, the people said.

Formula One’s IPO may occur as early as in June, said one of the people. An application for the IPO may be submitted as early as this week, the person said. At $3 billion, the IPO would be the biggest in the world since Spain’s Bankia SA (BKIA) raised $4.4 billion in July. Drawing on Formula One’s growing popularity in Asia, a Singapore listing may also help the cachet of the city’s stock exchange, which is vying with Hong Kong’s bourse to attract companies from across the world.

A CVC representative in London didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment yesterday.

Formula One Chief Executive Officer Bernie Ecclestone has no plans to sell his 5.3 percent stake in the offering and will keep his position under CVC’s plans, he said last month. F1 Group, the sport’s commercial rights holder, may post $657 million of pretax profit on sales of $2.3 billion next year, according to London-based industry monitor Formula Money. It had $1.6 billion of revenue in 2010.
United IPO

Singapore last year gave the British soccer team Manchester United Ltd. permission to do an IPO of about $1 billion. That sale, scuttled amid stock market volatility in late 2011, may be revived, people familiar with the deal said in March.

By listing in Singapore, where a Formula One race has been held since 2008, the auto-racing series would take advantage of its growing popularity in Asia. This year, pop star Katy Perry, rock band Maroon 5 and Taiwanese singer Jay Chou will perform in the city-state during the three-day race.

Formula One also holds Grand Prix races in China, Malaysia, Japan, Korea, India and Australia. The Bahrain Grand Prix, held on April 22 amid protests calling for the race to be canceled, saw two-time defending world champion Sebastian Vettel winning to move atop the drivers’ standings. Bahrain’s mostly Shiite political opposition had stepped up its anti-regime protests in the run-up to the race, with the Formula One chiefs resisting the calls.

If I was Mercedes I'd be pissed as well. Combined with the Parent company already pressuring them for the expensive "advertising" that has minimal sale results this could be serious.

I see very little in the way of Joe Saward's note negates that.

I couldn't find the post, but Joe Saward mentioned that Mercedes had an ace up their sleeve to sue over being left out of the Concorde Agreement (under some EU law). Without the Concorde, the flotation would be worthless (or least significantly less valuable) with an agreement binding FOM, FIA and the teams together.

If I recall, he went on to state that Mercedes is big enough to sue and slow things to a halt to get a better deal and spot on the board.

I think Joe is right in that both sides are posturing during these negotiations to one up the other.

20% valuation loss or so.

Mercedes is IMO rather important to F1, but F1 is not that important to F1.

Bernie is as usual being an ******* and considering Mercedes as a team that was recently formed with only 1 GP win to its name, rather than it's history as a engine provider and constructor from several decades ago.

McClure escaped with only a concussion and "minor internal bruising"

http://espn.go.com/racing/nascar/nat...alladega-crash

Quote:
CONCORD, N.C. -- Eric McClure was released from an Alabama hospital on Monday evening after what his sister described as a concussion and mild internal bruising from Saturday's horrific Nationwide Series crash at Talladega Superspeedway.

Emily Brandt, who also handles McClure's public relations, said her brother's status for Friday night's race at Darlington Raceway remains up in the air.

It is NASCAR's policy that a driver that receives a concussion must be cleared by a neurosurgeon with at least five years of experience with sports-related head injuries before being allowed back in the car. In some sports leagues the athlete must wait at least seven days before returning to action.

There will be only six days between Saturday's crash and Friday's race.

Brandt said McClure will meet with a specialist on Tuesday or Wednesday to determine his status. He is scheduled to hold a press conference on Friday at Darlington.

Why don't you post something that will stir up some relevant discussion in here instead of whining?
