I'm sure it is but for the effort I'd try to get a used tranny and rear diff.

That is just my $.02 though

Ahhhh........ but my trans is PPG'd and has a KAAZ 1.5 LSD.

So swapping the ring & pinion in the trans is a must. An R180 rear WOULD be nice....

well that does make it a little different then I guess.

I *think* you can swap it right out but don't hold me to it 100% (right out as in split the trans and all that good stuff)

ok here is the latest update: Not sure if I mentioned this before but I was going to go to Maine in the Baja. Well we just got home 4 hours ago. I have put 3k on this since it was put in. 2k of that was within the last 5 or so days.

Mileage (MPG): well in town this really hasn't changed. I don't idle through town anymore in 5th so this really hasn't changed. Highway has been pretty good. Let me explain though: if you have a headwind or bad crosswind the mileage will take a hit, but it will be better then before but it will not be the greatist. I would get mid 24 stock now I will get low 27. nice open road driving and some "city stuff" will get you mid 27 to very low 28. Here is the kicker though....all highway and being reasonable but not slow I got at one point 31. In stock form the best I could muster in a drive like this would have been 25.

Driveability: well it is a little bit of a dog going up hills but I will say that out on the open road it is much more calm. I have to say I would deal with it being a slug for the calmness that it has in the upper speed ranges. I was in upper Maine (you know way up there on I-95) where the speed limit is 75 and I'd rather not say how fast I was going in public but it was pretty damn fast and it was serene. The wife used to notice when I was movin' before but now she only was noticing that we were the fastist thing on the road.

In the end though I really don't think I am going to make my money back on this. Do I love driving my Baja more now? You bet.

If you are going to do this I might tell you to consider going with the .78 instead. I want to take Hocrest's for a drive sometime and see what it is like since he has that in his Baja.

I wish there was a way to keep the stock 5th gear and add this as a 6th gear. I would have to say that would be sweet as heck. Oh well

So was it that much of a dog on hills? Did you end up dropping to 4th a lot?

Yea I wish someone figured out an easy way to drop in a 6 speed.

really it isn't that much of a dog that I had to drop into 4th on the highway. I've owned some slow a$$ subarus in my day so I am used to going down a hill fast to make the next hill easier.

one example: I was in a construction area that ended as we went up hill. I had this impatient person behind me and when the construction was over I just left it in 5th and left him pass me. I crested the hill and overtook him and that was the end of him. I could have went to 4th but I wasn't in the hurry that he was.

We were going up the coast stopping at York ME, then hit LLBean, then we went to Lubec and watched the sun rise the next day (farthest east point you can do so), then to Calais where we crossed into NB and made a loop up to Houlton while in NB and then down 95 for awhile till we got to some road that took us to Ben and Jerry's and then off to Mt Washington eventually.

There was more to this trip but you get the idea.

Default You have just made me very happy!

So let me begin by saying THANK YOU for posting this.

I have a 2001 obw with a manual tranny that i love because it does everything that i want out of a car, but the gas mileage is turrible! I drive 70% hwy miles, and even with a k&n filter, tires aired up, and driving 60 i get a consistent 24 mpg. My last car was a civic hatchback (I know. i know.) and the shock of getting half the mpg still hasn't worn off a year into owning the obw.

I am getting my head gaskets, timing belt and water pump taken care of in a couple weeks by a buddy who owns a shop. While it's there, i am doing a light polish on the heads and intake with a back angle on the valves, a borla knockoff header AND NOW () I am now planning on doing this change to the .738.

I know you stated that you might suggest the .78 5th. Do you have a video of shifting from 4th to 5th to help see the jump? Does your car have any modifications done or is it stock?

Thanks again subeman90!

You're welcome! Glad to help.

I don't have a video and I would say that it could easily be made but youtube has locked me out of my account and I have no idea why. If I can figure that out I can easily pop off a quick video.

I have no modifications except I have eliminated the plastic crap for the intake and replaced it with 2-45 degree joints and a piece of pipe but that is b/c I broke the plastic one. I don't even have a k&n in there.

Here is a pic of someone elses baja but it is basically what I did:

Default Looks nice! Question though....

That looks very nice! I need to try that out! It's true that that these guys are really choked down in several areas. I cut out several of the intruding "fins" in the air box that block air from reaching the other side of the filter. If you look in the entrance to the airbox they are pretty obvious. Between that, the k&n, and the removal of the plastic piece off the underside of the hood blocking the cold air ( I think you talked about this piece), and rolling the turn into the throttle body, the car feels much more alive! I even gave the wife's mazdaspeed 3 a go! (I lost obviously, but she was surprised at the quickness)

I'm hoping to get enough extra low end torque to kinda counter the .738 gear to where i don't have to downshift most of the time. I won't be towing anything long distance. I just have a small boat (gt-150 glastron) and trailer that i use locally and could stay in 4th.

I really love how the car feels like a little 90's japanese pickup and don't want to do anything too drastic to make it boy racerish or anoying to drive. I am really enjoying the benefits of small and/or cheap changes though.

I'm basically just looking to you for a update on how you're liking the setup after 5 months. As long as you still generally like it, then it's my ticket to a more reasonable average mpg.

Thank you greatly!

I like it but I'm not in love with it. In the city it is fine (I find myself in 4th a lot more) and on the highway it is so much nicer to drive. I wish I got a little more out of it for gas mileage though.

I towed about 2k with it this weekend and it did pretty darn good I must say.

I am going to take a look into my airbox and see what improvements I can make there like you were saying. Hmmmmm

Default Awesome!

Cool! That's what i was looking for. 5 months is a good test time to figure out if you hate something.

At 27-28 average mpg with the ability to get better if i keep my foot out of it I'd be super happy. 28mpg is almost 20% more than i'm currently getting. That's 2.8 gallons less a week. ( I go through about 14 gallons a week) Thats 124 gallons a year. At $3.50 a gallon for gas, that's 436 bucks a year. So not only will i have to fill up less, i can go farther on a tank. So i understand you're not in love with it but hey, that's pretty nice looking to me even though it's not ideal.

I'll get some pictures up here tommorow so you can see what i did on the airbox.

What's the not to love part? Less power and more downshifts on hills?

I guess just the fact that I need to run 4th a little more than I am used to on certain roads.

I've been trying to imagine the 4th to 5th shift, and googling other transmissions. I think you did it right because you have a good lower first and second to get rolling or get out of somewhere, but the 5th for mpg. A little higher 4th might help a little i bet (??) but that seems a lot more difficult.

We just need to find a little more low end grunt from these engines. Delta cam's make a torque cam? Something with power from idle to say 4000?

Hmm how would you get the 5th gear replaced without the transmission getting pulled? Anyone have a link to a tutorial? I'm highly tempted to put in a .78 in my Outback!

unbolt some of the exhaust, remove the drive shaft, and remove the AWD tail section of the trans. You will no be looking at the gears. Please look at the pics in the beginning of this thread.

if you are lucky then yes. Might need a puller to help them along. Like I said in the origional thread I paid to have this done and I am only going by what the guy told me. I do know infact that the trans was never out of the car though.
