Default Lifetime alignment?

So I searched for threads on this and found one abot 8 years old, so I'm gonna start a new one. I know places do it, but has anyone had (recent)experience with it? I get my car aligned about twice year becasue the roads around here are so crappy and I pay about $90 to have the dealership do it. Firestone says they have a lifetime alignment thing for $170. So, do y'all think its worth it?

only issue with that is i know some people aren't competent enough to even understand how to align a modded vehicle.. I know with my car when i took it to sears, i had to show them how to align it to my camber settings..

A lot of these places only adjust toe and don't bother with camber and caster. The life time thing isn't too bad of a deal. Sure better than $90 per alignment.

Yea, I am a bit concerned about the alignment with aftermarket parts. I don't have any aftermarket suspension parts yet, but my next upgrade will be sways and endlinks. I figure if I get 2 alignments out of it I would break even.

sways and endlinks shouldnt make a difference.. I have a tiburon with adjustable camber plates, adjustable control arms, everything is adjustable on mine.

the only thing you need to worry about is that they usually only do the spec camber/toe etc which arent very good settings. I was able to talk my firestone into doing what I wanted just last weekend, just tell them you know they arnt responsible for uneven tire wear.

I second the camber adjustment. I took it to a local shop and they stated that they had never messed with a Saab 9-2x before, I had asked them if they had ever aligned a Subaru Impreza/WRX wagon, to this they responded "of course!!!". I explained to them that this was the exact same thing. I had to go and show the technician the camber bolts. Unfortunately the car still pulls slightly to the left and I have tried to explain the issue to them and it has not led to a fix. Sorry for venting, but in the end I would not take my car there again and so I am glad that I am not stuck with them for the life of the vehicle.

I have the lifetime alignment on my Legacy. If you are going to need more than a couple stock alignments, it is a decent deal. Not all Firestones are created equal. Until a new one was just built near me, I was at the point of trying to decide whether I wanted to get my next alignment there.

My mistake was giving them money to do an inspection while I was there. Never again will I give that place any money. They tried to charge me to replace parts I already had because they didn't have the part I needed to pass inspection, and for that, they would have given me a sticker. They also demanded that they could only replace things in pairs, including wipers, while I was standing next to the display with all the individual wipers, which happened to be the same as my 2-week old wipers (one did have a small tear).

at any rate, I am happy that I have a nice new Firestone near me that I can continue getting my free alignments from. I am not sure if I trust the overall company enough to ever give their service centers more money (I do buy Winterforce tires).

IMHO. These type of deals just seem to me a way to get you in the door so they can sell you other services or find other things wrong with the car. Even dealer service programs that are included in the price of a new car are in part designed to keep customs coming back to the dealer so they can sell other services.

I bought the Firestone lifetime alignment service about 60k miles ago. So far so good. I've had 6 alignments since. I should add that while I have Sti springs/struts, I don't require custom adjustments. Whatever OEM standards they follow have been working well for me and my tires.

+1 for this, applies to any 'chain' service center - dealerships included.

I've gotten to know and trust the guys that work at my local Merchants...they are car guys with project cars and they like to work on cars that people care about.

i rx mine so alignments are important and done often. so I bought a 3 yr dealio and only go to this particular place and yes they align to my spec. They also do my state inspections.

what's important is the people who work there, not the name.

for quality, that is true, but not many places offer deals for multiple alignments, and that is why the name becomes important.

I used to work for places like that including a few Merchants years back before moving up into dealerships and there is a reason they sell you a lifetime policy. Just about every case, it is an hourly kid doing the alignment who is only setting the toe and that is it. Some places like Sears will cancel the policy if you have suspension work done to the car. The key is finding a place that has decent technicians or dedicated alignment techs.

Stay away from the Merchants in Short Pump and there is another one which I forget. I recently had a Toyota customer come in because one of the local Merchants told them their TMPS in one wheel just disintegrated and they noticed it as they changed the tire. Yeah right!! What they failed to tell them is they broke the damn thing taking the tire off being it was in pieces and the light never was on prior to them replacing tires. What's more insulting is they charge a TMPS fee for mounting and balancing tires if your vehicle has a TPMS system.

I know they are having big issues in Richmond as they are always hiring technicians, Service and Store Managers at like 10 locations. That is a tremendous turn around indicative of a problem.
