Default How to test transmission out of car?

I had to remove the part of the transmission that holds the shift fork in place, etc. Had to do it to replace the stupid shift rod seal.

I put everything back together tonight. How can I test that it goes into all gears outside the car?

Stick a screwdriver through the hole in the shift rod & move it forward, back , side to side like you would your shifter.

Ok, I did the in and out portion and it works fine, but have not tried the side to side. I'm guessing that it's just like the shifter and having it in the middle would be neutral?
