Hey Jdub. What percentage, would you say, are women who come in to your shop with "stupid" problems like the ones you described? I venture to guess around 80%.

I would agree with that but the cause problems are usually men or the problems where they tinkered with it and ****ed it up more is men

The thing I hated about working as a mechanic was how all the customers thought you were trying to rip them off, or they somehow knew better than you on what was wrong with the car. If you know what's wrong, why did you bring it to my shop?

Me: Well okay its this to replace but... your car has 6 of them. Do you want to diagnose whats wrong?
customer: I told you whats wrong its an oxygen sensor

I really need to start keeping track of all the ****ed up stuff i find in the shop. I had a Nissan Murano with a blown transfer case. The owner said they "didn't know" that you shouldn't use the AWD LOCK button for daily driving purposes.

Anyone here remember trying to drive a bronco or K5 blazer when it was in 4LO? In the murano, it literally locks everything to the same RPM.

My responce was... "Did you read your owners manual?"

Then of course, there was the guy today with the 04 Caddy DeVille who wanted to know why his drivers rear tire exploded. I felt like kicking him in the face when we found 75psi in the other three tires, and 85 in the spare

I use to be a tech. My faith in humanity died a little every day due to the stupidity of customers. Its like the average person cannot fathom reading an owners manual or learning ways to take better care of their car. Dont count on them to ever invest time to learn a little bit about the machine they drive.

I went back to doing it as just a hobby. I like it better that way. Put it this way. 5 years ago every idiot with a 1.8L 1ZZ toyota engine would think "its a toyota i dont have to change the oil regularly every 5k-10k miles" and would bring in completed siezed engines only for toyota to warranty them.

customer: My car is running bad, change the spark plugs
me: Ok, well I noticed your check engine light is on as well. I can change your spark plugs, but that might not be the problem. You should let us put it on the scanner so we can be sure we're taking care of problem.
customer: No, just change the spark plugs.
me: Alright, but I just want you to know that changing the plugs probably won't fix it.
customer: Change the spark plugs.
**After changing the plugs**
customer: It's still doing the same thing! You didn't change anything! Show me the spark plugs you took out!!

If it's a woman, I don't blame them. So many crappy shops try to take serious advantage of women & people they've figured out don't know anything about cars. I have several female coworkers that have been taken for a ride by places around here - things like a 900 dollar wheel bearing change (for just one bearing) or 300 dollars for 2 new tires (we're talking $60 all seasons, not fancy tires at all).

It definitely goes both ways. There are many bad customers, and many bad service shops. It's the human condition.

Customers are typically grade A morons. It does not matter how much you try to point them in the right direction the "customer is always right so you should listen to my clueless BS and do as I say attitude" takes hold and they just get more pissed off that they had to spend more money after not listening to you and act as if it is your fault.

Biggest reason right there for why I hate customers. I am not here to rip you off or help you screw up. I am here to solve your problem and do it right the first time. If that is too hard to understand then GTFO of here and go annoy someone who is more than happy to take your money and rob you blind.

Both these. Had a customer come in with a Subaru about a week ago needing an alternator replaced. Wanted us to use his ****ty carquest part. Then complained a week later when his new alternator crapped out and how he had to pay labor again to put on another.

I'm sorry but if you buy the parts and expect a warranty that's just ridiculous. Even says it in our discloser.

Yeah i buy my own parts sadly i couldnt change my own brakes because where i was living wouldnt allow any type of work in the parking lot. I got the same disclaimer on my Brembo Blanks and EBC pads + inner and outer bearings. Looking at some of the crap these places stock ill gladly buy my own parts.

That's fine if you buy quality parts and understand there is no warranty of your parts blow.

I've had a few good mechanics that would go over the work done with me. that's awesome, very informative, and i gain a lot of trust dealing with them.

My friend owns a shop, and i'm always hearing how frustrating it is that every customer thinks he's ripping them off, when in truth he's trying to give them the best recommendations or for the most part, just telling them the truth. They're always shocked when he quotes them labor fees but he cant do the work for free you know? he's gotta make a living somehow.

Yep most people think that and I hear why do you charge for diagnostic and not apply it to the repair. Well we have to pay the tech to look at it, why should knowledge and training be free

i think part of it is that people don't realize they cant afford to own a particular car until they have to fix it.

I see this all the time people get a used car then get it checked out after the fact and can't afford to fix it. Cars suck and are expensive

So this Evo that came in smells like an ash tray, kid said well it runs bad. Okay so I go check it for codes and find 8 but the check engine light doesn't light up.

Kid: "oh yeah it's been on so long the light burned out"

Me: "facepalm, okay well it this to look at it initially and with this amount of codes it might need another diag after replacing parts

Kid: "ok we'll I prob can't fix it just need it diag"

Me: if you can't afford the car why did you buy it (didn't say it but sure thinking it)

So he leaves and I go to pull the car into the shop, well the clutch is basically gone.
The timing belt hasn't been done and it's at 115k
It needs O2 sensors and a MAF
It's running stupid lean
He is lucky the car hasn't died yet
