My girlfriend and I went to Doug's Hyundai in Lynnwood this evening to look at a 2003 Subaru WRX sedan.
http://www.dougshyundai.com/seattle-used-cars-lynnwood/detail/2003-Subaru-Impreza-WRX/5/JF1GD29693G509804/~/VehicleTypeID_~Price1_~Make_Subaru~Model_/3 The WRX has 85k, scratches in the rear bumper that got rattle canned over, STi struts with Tanabe springs, tint, some weird exhaust can, and a small punctured passenger tire (slow leak). We took it on a test drive and it checked out fine. No boost leak, blown struts, ect... So we went in to talk about financing it. 1. They told us over the phone that it was listed as $12900. Got there and it's $13900. 2. We asked them to run my girlfriends credit first before mine. I only wanted to be the co-signer if she couldn't qualify for a decent interest rate. The sales rep (Sunny) came walking back and without looking at my girlfriend, said "we didn't even run your credit". 3. When I told them everything that wasn't stock and made an offer of $9000, she rolled her eyes and said that she's going to get the KBB price for us. She didn't even tell the sales manager our asking price. Instead, she came back with the KBB price for a 03 Subaru WRX in excellent condition. She brought a price of $12500, I looked it up on my phone before hand and told her that it's $11900 if it was in excellent condition but it wasn't! 4. We up'd the asking price to $9500 and she turned around and asked a "used car manager" if he would sell for $9500. His response was "have a good day" with a mouth full of sun flower seeds. He told us that if we find a Subaru WRX in the same condition for that price, to buy it but they would not sell to us for that price. 5. Another sales guy (over the phone) told us that they took the WRX as a trade-in. Dealerships lose nothing from trade-ins when someone buys a new car. The "used car manager" with a straight face, said the trade in value was $12000. We called bull **** on him and the sales rep. When does a dealership give a customer a trade in value for the same as sale prices? Never. 6. We got told that us putting $5000 down payment wouldn't do anything to help with price. When has putting 50% of asking price for a down payment not help for price? WTF? 7. When we asked if they would even work with us on the price, they said no. I asked for a car fax when walking around the car looking at the ins and outs. By the time we started talking, I still didn't see a printed car fax. Sunny just told us that there were 3 owners and no accidents. By the end of all this... we walked away b/c of how rudely we got treated. It was like they didn't even want to sell a car or work with us. I have a really good credit score and we were ready to buy. Just b/c my gf and I are under 25 doesn't mean we should get treated like crap. Doug's Hyundai lost a sale and customers tonight and we will NEVER go back. I recommend to stay away from the rudest, lying dealership in the north sound.

Well keep looking and dont give up hope. It took two months to find mine (looked at 9 and all rallied the hell out of) and a lot of work to make it unique. But I definitely got it for less than 10k and at 66k miles

Took Court and I 4-5 months to find her wagon with one owner and 40k on the engine. Just need to be patient and keep looking. Finding a "clean" or non "bought not built" 02-03 won't be easy :/ Last edited by zigzag801; 05-31-2012 at 10:50 AM. |

You have to keep more in mind than the value of the car. What is your self respect worth to you? Keep looking. Eventually you'll find your car. |

I worked at many car dealers, they almost always pay a few thousand under the lowest KBB value for trade ins. They always have a few thousand dollars wiggle room. The whole bait and switch with the price is nothing new, if they do try that just walk then and there. Dont be emotional about the car, its just a piece of metal, the dealerships rely on you getting emotionally attached and wanting the car to get away with their BS. But if you dont care and walk away then thats that and you can move on to finding the right car for ya.

Let me start off by saying I hate car salesmen too, but I am one of them.... And being on this side of the table has given me a different perspective.... I'm not saying they weren't shady and just bad peeps but... 1- not all car places have THOUSANDS of dollars in wiggle room, sure on some cars yes, but one thing I have found, it goes on a car by car basis, one thing that is true for one car isn't always true for others. 2 - we don't pay thousands under kbb, why would they have a trade-in value for the public? Again, goes by a car by car basis. 3- I wouldnt have gone to my sales manager either... You know that car (from a dealership is worth more, I paid 9300 cash for 03 with 56k from a private party bone stock). 4 - with them changing the price on you, not showing you a carfax and saying they paid 12,000 for it all would.have been signs to leave. Trade ins are where money is made, and where we.can be most negotiable (most of the time). And do your research! Show them prices of cars that are the same.cars at another dealership/a close.city! Also kbb changes.weekly! It may not be by much but it does change. Again, I'm not saying these were.not bad.peeps (they sounded shady as hell) but I had to get out some misconceptions. Sorry if I sound like a dick but we are not all bad! 2- Last edited by Gam30vR; 06-01-2012 at 02:54 PM. |

http://www.northamericancaroftheyear.org/ Their warranty is better than most including our subarus 2012 Hyundai Elantra, North American car of the year.... 03's and older are hit and miss but after 03 they are definitely a good car. like I said, RESEARCH. |

I was ready to walk out when the sales Rep rolled her eyes when I gave her my asking price. Rude sales Rep never will get my business.
That says a lot bc my gf and I are both sales reps |

The bigger problem here is, is that they knew they wouldn't have to work with you because even if you put up a "fight", they know down the road there will be an idiot that actually buys it at the price they're asking.

Putting money down won't help with the price PERIOD. It will help lower your monthly payments, but a dealership isn't going to give you a better deal the more money you put down or if you pay in full cash. They might give you a better deal if you finance through them, because they get a kick back from the bank, but that is about it.

Agreed that dealership is terrible. But Carter Subaru in Shoreline is amazing! Great respect and willing to work with you on the price and even re painted the bumpers because they were faded.
