Mine never has been changed... I bought my '07 WRX in May 2007 and saw this thread maybe a year ago but forgot... I just PM'd my local Subie dealership parts person to see the price since I have Subie bucks I need to use so it will be free. Dang... I'm kinda excited to see how bad mine is... ![]() |

just bought an 00 OBS, it rained yesterday and all the air coming out of my ac vents smelled very... musty. Definitely moved this to the top of my to-do list, pictures to be posted in a week or two. very disturbing/entertaining thread, props on the right up!

Having worked in a lube shop for a year and changing these on all types of cars, I keep up on mine no doubt. I think Subaru says change every 2 years or 25k miles (might be 50k I don't remember exactly)? I would do it once a year.
I can't speak to the validity of the claims, but there are HEPA and non-HEPA filters. I would definitely go with the HEPA ones just for that added assurance. And really if you only change it once a year the price difference is totally justified in my mind. I didn't look through all the pages in this post, but I've seen dead animals (usually of the rodent variety, but also some avian types) and feces in, on or around the cabin air filter. Working on cars for a living equates to seeing some crazy and our disgusting stuff! |

That's fairly common actually. I thought all newer subies had the filter installed, but I know for sure that scions and lower model toyotas don't have the filters from the factory.
I always thought it was strange for the filtration to be built in but skimp on the filter. |

just bought one, super excited to replace it tonight, pics to follow....
EDIT: Well unfortunately it appears that musty smell could not have been my cabin air filter because apparently my car does not have that option... which is weird because I was not aware that cabin air filters were the sort of thing that would be optional in cars, but whatever... guess I'll have to start looking for some other reason for the musty smell, way bummed! but props on the write up! The USDM WRX GD didn't get cabin air filters IIRC. The STi did.

Just replaced mine. 2004 STI, I think it may be original with 75k miles. Luckly no mice or nests, but it was significantly dirty. Blower fan works much better now and there is no more "musty" smell.

^^ yuck. I just replaced the filter in my wife's Civic after 70k miles. It looked very similar. The blower is definitely stronger, which is good since its been so damn hot.

Given the ongoing interest in this subject I may try to put in a better filer in my 2004 Forester. As I said previously, there wan none in the slot when I check about a year back. I decided to just cut a furnace filter to fit, and didn't take much care. So it may be time to look and see if my home-made filer is catching anything.
