i was thinking about putting a clear vinyl film on my roof so instead of buying a cross bar and a basket, i could something like this, http://www.weathertech.com/racksack/, and not worry about scratching my paint. any thoughts?

The bottom of the rack sack is made of a much softer material than the rest of the bag. It's made to be on your roof without damaging the paint. A film wouldn't hurt but it's not necessary.

Does the sack contact the roof at all? With any dirt between the rack sack and the paint, not so good. With fluttering caused by driving faster than 12 miles per hour, even worse. |

I agree that one can "feel" that the paint on cars is thinner, albeit not necessarily in the tactile sense of "feel". Maybe it's from already knowing that cheapskate robo-painters are applying the paint, or maybe there is some "reveal" on the part of a thinner, cheaper paint-job that I can't put into words, but since the mid-90's paint just looks and "feels" thinner. Or maybe it's just the aesthetic nature of the water-based paints to look a certain way some of us unconsciously call thinner. I only chime in because I agree that the Impreza's paint feels thinner (admitting it could be other attributes of the paint process giving that impression), and I agree with you that it is an industry-wide problem. Still: high-end luxury cars don't give off this aesthetic, so maybe there is a factory solution to cheap paint jobs. Or else I'm dazzled by the BMW logos (lol). I want to get that full Xpel treatment. It's the clear-coat the factory should have put on. I just wandered my neighborhood this morning, and observed that the 2010-2011 Outbacks and Forresters all over my 'hood have significant (ie. notable) traces of road rash on the front clip, compared to other brands (but they have it too), so maybe Subaru's robots are extra stingy (or extra efficient, depending on point of view)

The whole paint "feel" think is partly the paint and partly the metal underneath it. If you put two steel plates in front of someone, and one is 1/32 thick while the other is 12 inches thick, then have them drag their hand across the surface... They would be able to tell you which one was thicker. The thicker plate has a (slightly) different reaction to touch, plus it transfers heat away from (or into) your hand at different rates. In general, feeling things is mostly voodoo and nothing something that can be easily explained.

just a poor design of the securing mechanism, the push pins that hold them in place should be placed up higher |

So the low oil light came on again (first instance was the end of April). SOA has told the dealer to perform a consumption test. Can't be too mad. Everyone is doing the right things to

Thin metal isn't necessarily bad, if it can absorb an impact and bounce back.
And you can't really see the thickness of the paint itself, but you can see the thickness of the clear coat. |

Anyone install (or remove) your OEM cross bars? Not the aero ones for Sport models, just the plain cross bars. The screws are in so tight I can't get them to budge. They're star shaped (torx) screws & the part came with a screw driver. Had a few others try as well. I'm going to try with a drill bit attachment tomorrow but I don't want to risk stripping them. Anyone have any advice who HAS done this? I don't want to have to go & spend money on install after I saved it with my double discount codes.

Subaru's website just got an update. I'm building a 2012 Impreza Premium hatchback and it says that the optional sport grille is "Excluded".... The heck?!

I doubt they are seized up with corrosion, but it would not surprise me if they were installed with locktite. |

I'd like to think it's a zen thing, and has no rational explanation, but the above observation about thin metal is I think an excellent almost scientific one. I didn't know paint was spread so thin.

The doors on the impreza are significantly heavier than the doors were on my 2008 hyundai elantra. If the sheet metal is thin, the internal bracing is much thicker.
Zen would be not comparing the paint job on a $20,000 dollar entry-level subaru with a $50,000 luxury car. That's about as productive as barking at the moon. |

Thinner metal = a lighter car. What's under the metal is what saves your ass in a collision!

Is it just the Subaru brand or do the doors on the Impreza swing open very quickly and widly? If so, is there a way to slow it down ir put some resistance to it?
