Default 2012 break-in / oil consumption survey

Vote on how you broke your engine in, and if it consumes oil.

Easy - Light throttle, low revs, efficient driving. Little to no engine braking. Possibly some cruise control.

Recommended - What the manual recommends. No cruise control or racing, varying loads and speeds under 4K RPM.

Hard - Heavy throttle, high revs, sometimes exceeding 4K RPM. Lots of engine braking, shifting often and to lower gears than necessary.

I followed the manual. At 7000 my low oil light came on. Had a dealer service at 3750. Currently have an open complaint(s) with SOA. The oil loss was somewhere between 6-7k, for the first 5-6k there was no oil consumption/loss.

Mine is currently in the process of a oil consumption test. At the rate I drive ill know if it's actually burning oil ,or if the oil level sensor is bad, in about 2 weeks.

I guess I need to call a consumer advocacy group or something. I've got a rusty motel-room mattress for a drivers seat, and have to carry extra oil with me... Where's Nader???
Where's SOA? Sitting on their hands.

That reply had a grumpy sound to it. "Weren't not talking about that yet, just answer the poll!!!

I wonder what's going on with your car. I'm at 7,100 miles and haven't keep oil in my car long enough to notice any consumption. I change oil every 5K but so far I did this car at 2K and 5k, so I'll find out soon enough where it's at when I get to 10K.

CLL, mine didn't have any issues for the first couple of oil changes. My issues started just past 10k.

Damn, that's not good. Now it's just hitting me. This thread and other threads at the bottom of this page talking about oil consumption on brand new Subaru's.
And to think I got rid of my '09 Civic EX w/ 45k mi because Honda extended the warranty for the possiblity of the engine block cracking.
I'm starting to feel grumpy now

I went with Regular break in. though I was in between Easy and Regular.

I have seen no loss in Oil levels and have about 1300 miles on the ODO.

I tried to find similar complaints on the forester owners forum, where the 2.5 FB engine is used now and could not find any. Still, 3 cases of OC and most other owners well before 10K ... does not sound good.

Provide a link to your thread, please. I'm a newbie here, and still haven't gotten my arms fully wrapped around how this forum is organized. I can think of several places where you might have logically placed such a DIY thread.

Yeah I saw it. I shouldn't have to do my own warranty work, and if it wasn't burning oil, I'd probably tear into the seat. I almost did once, but I have a huge ongoing open complaint case with soa so at this point doing anything to the car MYSELF isn't happening.
