Default NC Safety and Emissions !FAILED!

head lights Pass
parking lights Pass
rear view mirrors Pass
windshield wipers Pass
tires Pass
Bla bla bla..... Pass, Pass, and Pass

Catalytic Converter Big Fat FAIL

So guess now I need to find a high flow cat. The question I have for all you my friends is. Do I have to have all 3 cats put back on my car to pass inspection?

Im new to California and have asked a few shops out here to see what I all need to do and have been told exhaust has to be pretty much stock. Dont know if its the same as there but hope that helps a little. Good Luck.

Then ask in a local forum...... There are many ways to get around a visual inspection.

Just get a stock downpipe and put it in for the inspection. If the car is nice and warmed up when it goes on the sniffer it should pass without the uppipe cat.

Disclaimer, I'm not a resident of NC and don't IM my car here so I'm not speaking from local experience, just past knowledge of how IM's generally work.

Im pretty sure its that you have to have as many cats on the car as it came with from the factory, high-flow or not. But I haven't had this problem yet.

You do technically, but if you're not getting a cat inefficiency CEL(resistor mod or flashed ECU) then the only way they'll know the uppipe cat is gone is from the exhaust test. That should go fine as long as the downpipe cats are warmed up.

Disclaimer, you are actually violating federal EPA regulations anytime you remove a stock cat or replace it with a high flow one and operate it on public roads. Even if you are in a state that has no emission testing.

In NC there is no sniff, just a visual and OBDII scan.

It depends on the shop you use. Legaly yes you need all 3 cats. Most shops down here will pass as long as they see one, they dont tend to check the sticker on the hood that says how many there should be.

Dont bring the car to a franchise, IE Goodyear, Firestone, Walmart, ect...

Bring it to some back woods shop.

Yeah here in NC it can be gutted as long as it's visually there. They tell us it has to appear to be working. We dont know it's empty The dmv likes to send cars around in NC that have cat deletes to catch people and ticket them so we inspectors are slowly getting more strict on visual inspection like CEL working when key is turned on and cats/emision components being there.

20$ has worked for me in the past but I went to a shop known to do that. You do it at the wrong place and you could get in serious trouble.
