Found a 40k mile 06 Impreza motor to go into an 05 Legacy for 1000 bux. Couldn't pass it up. There's a few sensors that are different that I'm not quite sure what they are. Wondering if I can just leave them unplugged. Everything else seems to look like it'll work. I AM swapping the intakes are they are completely different as well as the knock sensor and and a few emmission hose fittings. Can you take a look at the 2 pictures and let me know what they are and if my thinking of leaving them unplugged w/the original intake on the new motor will work. It looks like they can be unbolted from the block without any leakage?
There is one behind the drivers side timing sproket on the head. That looks like it may be a pain to take off. There is another on the passenger side rear head also. https://picasaweb.google.com/turbo38...92530247894930 https://picasaweb.google.com/turbo38...91479658128994

Those components can not just be removed. This will cause massive oil leaks. That engine is not the same as your original. It will require modification to work. The main difference is the heads and pistons. The new engine has AVLS (active valve lift system). Your ecu isnt designed to use this. I am doing this kind of swap right now, it has some difficulties. I wouldn't reccomend it unless you are highly experienced as I am.

Well, that's kind of what I was afraid the answer was going to be. Can you elaborate on what type of modifciations it would require, ECU swap I'm assuming? That said, I should be able to swap over the heads and be OK? |

The pistons are different and may cause issues. If you swapped this motor in you would need something to control the AVLS.

The pistons are a different shape to match the heads. They may contact your old heads as the combustion chamber is a different shape.
If you used your old intake manifold the engine would bolt in and work, but you would need something to control the AVLS system. The engine will be down on power without this system working correctly. jake |

I am going to use an rpm activated switch to turn on the AVLS, once I find out what rpm it is supposed to switch at. I will be using the 06 intake manifold, but this is a whole new challenge itself.

I have read about that approach. I know of 2 others now that have done the mod without messing with the AVLS. Here is an interesting thread you may want to check out http://www.subaruforester.org/vbulle...ter-64496-new/ |

I can tell you right now that by not using the AVLS you will be down on power. I know exactly how the system works. I am a tech at a dealership and have been working with subaru's for over 10 years. The AVLS only opens one intake valve fully and one partially until it is activated then it opens both intake valves fully. So essentially if you leave it disconnected you will not be using the full breathing potential of the heads. I am in the process of determining when the system activates and de-activates under all conditions so I can set mine up properly.

To hook it up, would it be as simple as getting an 06 ECU and plugging it in using the orig 05 intake, or is there a totally different harness to swap in too?

There would be way too many changes to make swapping ecu's worthwhile. You could way more easily wire up a vtec controller or rpm activated switch to your current setup.

Seems that going that route would be problematic in that the ecu would not know the cam profile has changed or how to adjust the fueling tables when it is activated. |

It needs to switch very early, so that shouldn't be a problem. The stock ecu can adjust for fueling. This is exactly how I'm gonna run mine.

Just for search purposes.... this is bs. An avls engine can run perfectly fine in a non avls ecu'd vehicle without the avls hooked up. Mine ran that way for 4 +years. However, hooking up a relay and making use of the avls is easy. You will possibly have to deal with idle issues and low speed launch problems.
