I took the chrome trim piece off. Made it easier for drilling and mounting of the camera.

The power connection was done by the installer, so I don't have all the details. To access the backup light to power the camera, remove the two bolts holding the left tail light assembly. Pull the whole harness straight back to get access. You'll see one bundle of wires coming through a rubber boot. Free the boot from the car to route the power wires through the boot hole.
I don't know how the installer did this part, so some how the wire went from the airbag area in the trunk into the tail light area. Connect the red wire from the back up light to the power connection of the camera. Connect the ground to the black wire going to the backup light. Well, if you got through all this, the your camera should be working. You'll want to aim your camera to make sure it's centered. Put everything back in reverse order. The covers snap back with moderate pressure applied, or you can pound it slightly to get the covers to snap back. This is it look like. |

Back Up Camera for 2012 Legacy
I'm new to this forum & Subaru's...we just bought my Lady a 2012 Legacy Limited which has the Harmon Kardon Premium Audio. She didn't want to spend the big $$$ for the Nav Unit but now wishes she had a back-up camera. Does anyone know if the Harmon Kardon HU has the connectors for a camera feed (not sure if audio units are the same across Subaru Models) and if so does SVXdc have a cable that will work with this vehicle? Also, the new Legacy does not seem to have the same set up as the earlier ones so it does not look like the camera listed as a direct drop in will work. It appears that it has the knock out just like the new Outbacks etc so any source for a factory like camera would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

http://www.kidsandcars.org/back-overs.html You can't see for roughly 10 feet behind a car even as small and open as the Impreza. Imagine something like the Focus or Veloster that has a massive blind spot |

On eBay I've seen a lot of the wireless backup cameras that have the display inside a rear view mirror that clips onto your existing rear view mirror. But that's not that elegant of a solution. Has anyone seen such a setup where you simply replace the whole OEM mirror with one with the display in it?

Ok, now I've found some replacement mirrors with a monitor built in. Just what I want except that you have to route power to the mirror. I have a 2012 WRX base without an auto-dimming mirror. I know that other models of WRX are available with an auto-dimming mirrors, which obviously require power. How likely is it that my base WRX has power already routed to the mirror even though i don't have an auto-dimming mirror?

Weigh the options before you drop $250 on a mirror, especially as our cars do not incorporate back up sensors or alarms. |

Would you buy the backup camera from a site (I would be able to get a discount of some sort) like this or would you recommend ebay instead?

The new XV has a rear camera option. Will that part fit our 2012 impreza's?

I'd be interested in retro-fitting a camera into my sedan, however, I have the NAV and don't know if there's anything I can do.

Mine does have the parking guide lines. I preferred to not have them and to use the ones that are built into the radio, but I couldn't find one that looked like the one I bought.
FYI, you can turn off the built in lines. |

On the camera? I'm being told on the Subaru NAV unit, the lines cannot be switched off, so I'd need to be able to turn them off on the camera (however you would do that).

Not on the camera. You can on the limited non-nav headunit (not sure about the nav unit), you go into the service menu and you can select different guide lines and turn it off from there.

Yeah, I've been told by people who have done it on the NAV unit, that it cannot be changed, they're always on. So I guess I need to find a camera that doesn't have them. Bummer because I liked how yours matched the chrome so well.

I haven't swapped my head unit yet, but from my research, you need to remove the big piece of brushed metal trim around the radio first in order to gain access to the HU itself. I believe that since you have the NAV HU, you won't need to disconnect the HVAC mechanical cables like I will when replacing my Sport Premium HU.
Also, I'm not fond of using a metal screwdriver to accomplish this task. I suggest something made of plastic like this: http://www.harborfreight.com/5-piece...set-67021.html |
