You're not really taking advantage of the higher octane unless you're tuned for it.
If you're tuned, you can squeeze out about 10-15 hp depending on what kind of fuel you go for. With the stock tune, bumping up the octane isn't that big of a deal. The ECU will adjusst for it a little bit, but you won't be making much more power. The problem will come when you want to go back to the lower rating. The ECU will have to adjust back to the lower stuff and in that adjustment period, you could experience detonation and knock. But Will's car is an Australian car, it's most likely that the factory tune is different than what is in the US. Simply because you can buy higher octane fuel in Australia.

i've only ever put 91 octane in my car. no reason really. i figure it will protect a tiny bit against detonation when i drive hard and it's usually only ~$2 per tank more than 87

I tried using higher octane to see if the ecu would adjust for it and make any difference. What I found is my gas mileage went down, my power felt off and I swear my exhaust tone was louder. Now I wanted this to work so the placebo effect would be a positive result but all I got was negatives. I cannot confirm, but I would guess that the ecu can't adjust enough for the higher octane and there wasn't a complete burn in the combustion chamber. This would account for lower power, mileage and increase sound. Just my .02

well for us in Australia the standard fuel is 91, 95 or 98 Octane, in Europe and Japan Octane levels of 100 are not uncommon. Just depends on the country I guess...

I've never contributed any of my cars, just lurked and comment every once in a great while.
Here was my first subie. Previous owner did everything you see to the car(purple tint , msr wheels-super light and noticeable in acceleration i have to say, CF trunk and hood, smoked tails, 4 piece bolt-on ground effects kit- , and some loud-ass cbe)I didn't have the money to change much, but i took off the body kit, I added Kartboy solid front endlinks and was going to order a better rear swaybar. I also put the stock hood back on and did the complete 90k maintenance schedule myself. I ended up trading in the car before I did the rear sway and therefore will be selling the rear kb solid endlinks that I had bought in advance. Again, I no longer have the car, only kept for about a year, but I will admit it was more fun than my current stock 08 2.5i. http://i1188.photobucket.com/albums/...DSC_1730-1.jpg Last edited by DexteRS; 09-16-2012 at 05:59 PM. I will have to get some pictures up, but I am happy with my setup. I have an '09 OBS with the OEM crossbars. The crossbars are VERY secure with no flex. Running 2 Yakima ForkLift trays and Thule Wheel-On front wheel holders. And modified the Subaru universal mounts so that I could mount a Thule front fairing. Whole setup is very secure and nothing moves around. Actually, when riding season is over I just undo the 4 mounts on the crossbars and remove the entire assembly and hang it up for the winter as a complete unit...

Hi guys
Wonder if you can help me. I would like to know if this set of springs will fit my car. My car is just around 7k miles and would like to have these springs installed. I am thinking of purchasing these eibach springs. see link below. Your help will be appreciated. You can also suggest other brands that will fit my car. http://www.rallysportdirect.com/Eiba...wering-Springs |
