Trying to stay stock. I love pioneer decks, but I'm trying to save some money, i don't want to have to repurchase a radio and then another aftermarket tuner. I'm still money ahead by adding an amp as i only have 170 in it now (aftermarket deck + xm would be in over 400 right now)

does that work with a stock HU?

I AM NOT AFFILIATED W/ any manufacturers or vendors.

that Alpine KTP-445u appears to be a nice little amp. for the price, i'd be looking to go with a 4 channel amp, possibly something bridgeable to give me the option to add a subwoofer down the road. -but that's just me.

The only reason i'm writing this is because the factory speakers will sound a little bit better with the amp, but nothing to write home about IMO.

i have my factory speakers runing through a line out converter/pre-amp, 40 watts RMSx4 / 350x1 amp with the high-pass filters cutting off anything below 200hz and they do "alight" as mid-range and tweeters. but believe me when i say that they are nothing to write home about when you run them through an amp in full range. i was tinkering with the settings on my amp and line-out converter again today, seeing if i could find a slightly better sweet spot... i figured i'd turn it up to where it sounds *good* the way its running, removed the RCAs to the sub and I wasn't impressed. i re-adjusted the gains on the amp and line out converter as a result, but now i am almost convinced that i should explore changing out the door speakers.

i've been toying with the idea of swapping the factory speakers out for the last couple weeks, but i'd almost want to add an EQ and / or a Crossover and a more powerful amp.... which at this point, i ain't even trying to mess with my car until spring.

-just FYI / IMO.

I'm just looking for more volume, apparently i have either adjusted our gone deaf in the last week because it really isn't loud enough anymore. It might be my mind missing a sub too which i will not be adding to this car because i need all the space i can get

I am pretty happy with the tweeter upgrade with the OEM HU although I was considering upgrading the HU too. I think I am going to do the other 4 speakers and be done with it. It will sound even better and having the stock HU keeps it on the downlow...

Change the head unit. It's amazing how much better it sounds after replacing it!

you will see the HU just plain ol sucks. changing the speakers w/o adding an amp is like pissing in the wind.

i wanted to keep the factory / "clean" look too.

I'm getting ready to install a Pioneer AVH-P2400BT. Got my harness and Axxess ASWC from ae64.com. Will also be installing the Pioneer Sirius optional modules. I have all of my harnesses soldered up and ready to go. The only thing stopping me from doing the installation now is that I haven't received my dash kit yet.

I'll be curious to see how the Axxess configures the steering wheel buttons during its Auto Detect mode. It's my understanding that the Pioneer HU does not support Push To Talk (PTT). But isn't that the purpose of the steering wheel button with the picture of the talking human head (the button you would push to initiate voice recognition commands on the factory HU)? If that's the case, then how does the Axxess configure that button during Auto Detect? Or does it leave that button unassigned? And if the Axxess leaves that button unassigned, how have others made use of that button? Has anyone assigned the Mute function to that button instead?

When it detects the HU brand as "Pioneer," the ASWC's auto-programming defaults to assigning the car's phone/Bluetooth buttons to preset-up, preset-down, and mute.

Starting in firmware version 2.27 (old hardware) or 3.07 (new hardware), Metra added a shortcut step to program the phone functions: After the ASWC's auto programming completes (and after it gives the LED blink codes to confirm which wires and which HU brand are connected), the LED will go solid RED. Press and hold your wheel's on-hook button until the LED turns off (should take about 4 seconds). That should program all 3 phone/BT buttons to the respective commands. See ASWC's vehicle-specific guide (online) for more details on the shortcut (it's not mentioned in the printed guides included in the package).

After auto-programming, test to make sure all 8 buttons work. See what each button does. Be sure to check in the various modes: radio (AM/FM), disc, MP3 (on disc or USB flash drive), iPod, sat radio, etc.

Some Pioneer models support on-hook and off-hook, but not PTT (since they don't do voice recognition). For those models, you'll have to use manual programming if you want to assign the PTT button to do something else.

Many people choose 'mute' but you can assign it to any remaining audio function that your HU supports (seek up/down, preset up/down, band, etc.). Neither the HU manufacturers or Metra will tell you what commands a particular HU model supports, so you'll just have to experiment.

Well, got the Pioneer HU wired up to the car, along with the harness and ASWC from SVXdc, and the Sirius radio modules. Also wired in a parking brake bypass that I bought off of Amazon.

Everything is working except for the parking brake bypass. The HU thinks the car is in motion all the time. It uses only three wires (ground, blue/white wire for antenna power, and light green parking brake wire).

Not sure how to troubleshoot that silly little thing....

Oops, never mind. The thing that made me think my brake bypass wasn't working was that the Pioneer HU showed a You Can't Do This Unless Your Car Is Parked error message when I tried accessing the Auto EQ function.

Posts 40 to 41 of the following thread explain that this behavior is specific to the Auto EQ function when a brake bypass is installed. So it looks like my brake bypass is working correctly for all functions other than Auto EQ.

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...4#post36211474

Never would have guessed this strange behavior.

Whew! Now that I know all is good, I can button everything up tonight!

Default Mission accomplished

Got everything installed and running!

I used painters tape to protect the center console, since I didn't disconnect the heater control wires during disassembly (I disconnected the mechanical cables, but not the electrical connectors at the bottom):

And here's the finished product:

I installed the Sirius receiver in the passenger-side footwell, zip-tied up high against some of the existing wire harnesses.

And I installed the Bluetooth mic in the cubby area at the bottom of the center console. There's a convenient hole in the top of the cubby area for running the wire.

Audio quality is greatly improved--much fuller sounding.

Default Pioneer head unit Bluetooth operating questions

I'm hoping that someone with a Pioneer AVH-P2400BT/P3400BH/P4400BH can answer these questions. I looked in the owner's manual, and this info seems to be missing:
  1. The Bluetooth allows you to program up to six phone number presets. The owner's manual tells you how to place a call using those presets, but it doesn't explain how to program the presets in the first place. You'd think it would be obvious, but it isn't (at least not to me).
  2. The radio provides Dialed Calls and Received Calls lists that you can use to re-dial those numbers. To test my new HU, I dialed my home phone number using the virtual number pad on the HU's touch screen. When the call ended, I checked the Dialed Calls list, but it remained blank. Why aren't my dialed numbers showing up in the list?

Has anyone else experienced these issues, or have solutions?

I have a sneaking suspicion that my HU needs a Bluetooth software update. Since I bought this over the Internet, I'm hoping this is a process I can do myself, since I didn't have the system installed by a stereo shop.

^If you use an aftermarket stereo, you can't use the Subaru stock mic, you have to use the mic that comes with the headunit.

No, it's a Sport Premium. I used the mic that came with the Pioneer stereo, and I used a Metra Axxess ASWC module so that I could keep my steering wheel controls active.

OK, here's what I determined after speaking to Pioneer Tech Support.

Apparently, in order to use the Bluetooth Presets, Dialed Calls list, and Received Calls list, you must first have loaded your phone's Contact List into the Pioneer HU. And in order to load your Contact List into the HU, your phone must support Object Push Profile (OPP).

Unfortunately, my cheesy Tracfone doesn't support OPP. So in order for me to use any of these features, I must upgrade my phone to one with OPP. I believe the Tracfone LG 800G supports OPP (my current LG 500G does not).

So I have to ask: WTF? How stupid is this? I can't manually program a phone into the Pioneer HU's presets? If I successfully dial a phone number from the Pioneer's built-in virtual number pad, that phone number does not appear in the Dialed Calls list? If someone calls my while I'm in my car, that phone number does not appear in the Received Calls list?

Really?

This is a good thing for everyone who is thinking of upgrading their factory HU to a Pioneer HU to understand in advance. You'd better confirm that your phone supports OPP in advance. If it doesn't, you might have better luck with a different HU brand--one that allows you to do Preset programming manually from the HU without being so completely dependent on the phone's ability to push its contact list to the HU.

Can someone tell me a good place to put the bluetooth mic, and how to get it from the back of the HU up to wherever that may be? I'm sure it's not as complicated as I think but this is the first time I'll have done anything to a head unit.

I got the kenwood DDX719 and will update as soon as I get it in and drive around a bit.

Many options:
  • On top of the steering column
  • On the sun visor, using a clip
  • In where the original mic is, but this will require pulling away the headliner, etc. to do
  • Or my choice, which was to mount it onto the "ceiling" of the cubby storage area in front of the shift lever. I fed the wire through the hole that's already there (reach in and you'll find it). I can provide a pic, if you don't understand where I'm talking about.

Does anyone know why, if my life depended on it, I could not remove the trim? It felt like the wires going to the AC/Heat controls were holding it in, and I couldn't get the bottom more than a quarter of an inch from the rest of the dash. I tried lifting up and out. Nope.

And yes, those links were disconnected on the passenger and driver side.

Hmmm, you should be able to pull it out, and then pivot the top end down, as I showed in post #239 above.

When you disconnected the mechanical cables, you not only unhooked the silver loops, but also unclipped the cable shielding from the pinch holders, right?

Nope. Nobody said "Make sure you unclip the shielding from the holders"
I'll try tonight.
