Default 2012 2.0i CVT Throttle stuck yesterday...

So as I was merging onto a highway, there were cars refusing to let me in. So I WOT'd from about 30mph to a little over 55. However, when I let my foot off the pedal, it stuck at ~5500RPM. Almost as soon as I noticed it was stuck I tried pressing, depressing, braking, and switching to low and it stayed there until I WOT'd again to almost 65 (dangerous where I was, but know what else is?).

I've had this happen once before. How about you? Should I tell the service center when I bring it in for the ECM update in a week or two?

I should also mention that it was like it was still responding kind of, like as soon as I let off the gas it jerked like I tapped the brakes, but when I put my foot down it only did a little speeding up. However, the RPM stayed the same.

scary! I'd call soa and b i t c h about it. and I'd definitely tell the dealer to take it for a spin and try to replicate it (let them drive it if its dangerous). good luck!

I've got a 5 speed, so most of what I'm about to say is based on speculation, rather than firsthand experience. This is a way less dangerous situation than a stuck throttle.

First off, your throttle wasn't stuck. If your throttle was stuck, the car wouldn't have slowed down when you got off the gas. The problem you had was the cvt getting itself stuck in a low ratio for longer than you wanted it to. That's partly just one of the perils of having an automatic or cvt transmission, you never know for sure what the gearbox is going to do, and the gearbox never knows for sure what you want it to do.

The CVT shifted to a lower ratio when you went WOT, to let you accelerate faster. It probably stayed in that lower ratio for a while because it wanted to make sure you didn't want to accelerate any more first. However, it sounds like it held it there longer than it really should have.

About how many seconds were you off the gas for?

I've heard some CVT owners saying that the transmission was sometimes slow to react. It may just be something you'd have to get used to. How long have you had the car for?

I also know there have been a few software updates for the CVT, so you may want to check with your dealer to see if you've got the latest iteration.

Sounds like you are being very gentle on the car and transmission, and it will last you a long time.

Hopefully you leased the car, otherwise good luck with the longevity of the engine and transmission.

Did you know 79 got his car up to a reported 130mph? There's another target to shoot for if you haven't already!

I don't know what happened, but if the CVT went to lower ratio and got 'stuck' there, letting off the gas pedal will immediately reduce RPM and slow down the car real fast. Kind of like what will happen when a manual is on 2nd, you accelerate hard then let off of the gas pedal.

The only way to really know is to have everyone with a CVT redline it (give or take 1,000 RPM) and see what happens.

C'mon, you know you want to!

You don't need to press the brake nor the button on the shifter to switch on neutral. Just move the shifter to N & you won't have to worry about a stuck accelerator.

If I accelerate briskly and let off the gas, the RPMs will hold and the engine deceleration and ratio change in the transmission has a delay. Something standard automatics don't do. I've noticed this phenomenon on the few times I floored it. I don't do that since I want good gas mileage.

To the OP: I think this is what you're feeling. It's just the nuisances of having a CVT (or this one in particular).

So you're saying you've never floored the accelerator pedal to speed up fast enough to merge onto a crowded highway from a short entrance ramp? You must live in bumfck, of bumfck county in bumfck Territory. There's nothing wrong with going WOT (within redline) as necessary after the engine is warmed up.

Zeeper- I've been polite, but you're just an arrogant know-it-all douchebag. F**k the f**k off.
The speedo goes to 150... I still had 20mph to go!
I should point out that I also own a ZRX1200, Zeeper has a bike like mine. Mine will BURY the speedo at 170 and is nowhere NEAR redline. Doesn't have a problem in tens of thousands of miles (my odo stopped at 38k). Zeeper is scared to take his big-bore bike north of a hundred.
Sooo quit talking all the smack, you're the one who's scared to drive or operate machinery in its mechanical limits.
Youu didn't rag on James for autocrossing his car, getting it stuck (twice I think), and then Lemon Law-ing it.

There appears to be a strong scientific correlation between running the car up to a reported 130mph and having a car that burns oil, and possibly coolant.

You did, yours does, and you brag about the first part, but complain like hell about the second part (end...less...ly)

Why do you need to personally attack anyone who points that out? It is a little rude, and dodging the swear filter can even get you banned here...

Worse things have happened...
just because you drive like a yankee old fart doesn't mean the rest of us are wrong.
My coolant and oil issues came a good bit later. After a s h I t e dealer grossly overfilled it.
But yet you just REALLY can't help yourself. Your personal attacks on me are just lame and redundant.
You couldn't even stick to the OP's topic. Riling me up and starting a contest of urinary aptitude are your obvious objectives.
Sorry I got a LEMON Zeep. I've been polite, tried agreeing with you, to no avail. You and aukip the lame, are basically just here seemingly to throw stones.
And Uncle Scotty and others use WAY worse language than I have, and also rampantly bash the homosexual community. That should anger ole auskip lol

Your constant complaining on every thread has become tiresome. I don't even know if I believe your complaints anymore. Someone mentions oil loss and your oil loss is worse; someone mentions a squeaky seat and your seat squeaks worse; someone mentions a rattle and your rattle is worse; someone mentions a coolant leak and your coolant leak is worse. It's hard to believe that EVERY bad thing that's happened to anyone with a 2012 has happened to you and is worse than for anyone else. Maybe you should just start a thread for your complaints and only post them there, then people who are tired of you can just avoid that one thread, instead of getting annoyed every time you post to a thread they're active on.

Lol this thread is ruined.

To address the topic at hand:
Ive gone WOT only a few times, but nothing scary happened. What happened to OP is either you are overreacting to cvt usual behavior, or somethings wrong with your car. I would say try to do it again and prepare for it so you can better assess what is going on.

Good luck man.

Wow- really talkin out your arse there...
I've never, ever said my cars oil or coolant issues were "worse than anyone else's". You really should proviode some quotes or cite refferenceif you're going to make such a claim.
I posted in this thread responding to the op. Personal attacks came, off topic, and I responded. But your claims and accusations are just yet another personal attack.
I said something nice about my car the other day, and good ole zeeper couldn't even contain his contempt.
All I am is a guy who was sold a crappy pos car, and I am engaging in discussions with other consumers.
You know what I do when someone's posts annoy me? I add them to the ignore list. Scotty and Auskip are just too much e-bashing and pee-ing contests for me...
But I do want to re-iterate- you are the ones who went off topic attacking me.

When I drove the cvt model for the first time, I noticed at wot it sort of "ran on" a little, iirc.
I agree with myrt's advice. Man, my spelling goes to crap on these mobile phone keypads...

I stand by statement that the OP is perhaps confusing the CVT's ability to hold the ratio/RPMs when accelerating rapidly. I was startled when this first happened, but now I know it's just the way it is. Kind of annoying IMO, but I drive this car like a nanny, so I don't encounter it much.

The STI on the other hand...
