Default oil smoke on start up and burning smell when driving/oil consumption

I just got this car 2 weeks ago it's an 03 with 53k miles vf39 with bolt on's tuned by sti Mikey. Few days after I got it noticed a oil smell and decided to check the dipstick and it was a quart low added oil and checked it again yesterday and was a quart low. Now the past 2 mornings it's blowing a decent amount of blue smoke on start up. With the oil cap off it has some puffing air coming out but no smoke that I can notice. Car runs good and doesn't really smoke when driving that I know of but always smell oil once I come to a stop from somewhere in the engine bay, no leaks on the ground what do you guys think I should check?

Well I took off the intercooler and the inside is soaked with oil, butterfly has a puddle of oil sitting in it and the coupler and the turbo has some going to the intercooler so I'm guessing the turbo is my problem correct?

The turbo is an option, any idea how many miles are on it? Have you done a compression test yet?

Compression test result were as follows
Cyl 1 162
Cyl 2 155
Cyl 3 160
Cyl 4 155

Now would ringlands affect comp testing or would a leak down be needed? Or is it def just the turbo?

I would say that the turbo is def blowing oil. That doesn't exclude further problems of course...

Yeah compression looks solid, how much shaft play do you have on the turbo? any oil on the exhaust side?

I just took off the turbo exhaust housing was clean, turbo was nice and tight..... took the cover off the cold side and the cover had oil in the bottom took the wheel off and oil was behind it and and the bolts for the back off the cover had oil on it wish I had a camera to take pics at the time but used the wife's yesterday since mine is broken....

Turbo looks fairly new only thing I can say maybe is the brass looking bushing that seals the rear part of the cold cover has grooves cut in the aluminum like it was scraping. Owner said he bought the turbo off here and it was suppose to be ported which I didn't see anything. Here the link to the car I got.

Inlet tube had a tiny bit of oil right at the turbo from what I can see and feel.

I had cleaned mine a week before this happened was still free but spray edit down with brake cleaner anyways

So these are throw away turbos no parts what so ever? Seems like all I would need is the brass o ring piece rest of the intake side is rtv'd

Just change the PCV valve. It's a few dollars and sometimes cleaning them does squat. I'd much rather this be the cause of a part that costs a few dollars, or worse yet, find that out after spending hundreds on a turbo.

Curious, are you running a stock PCV setup?

Yes after researching I'm wondering if I should put the turbo back together and get a Aos kit and see what happens :/

why you took the turbo apart is beyond me.... unless you work in a shop that rebuilds them, you shouldt be doing such things!

The PCV is one common issue, the other could be excessive blow by. But with good compression numbers like you found, im reluctant to say the leak down might be high. Wouldnt hurt to do a leak down for the hell of it.

Yea I did mark it like they recommend on the impeller and shaft but the mark came off the shaft so emailed blouch about rebalancing it since they had no contact number in the website.

Yea your right it would be good to do if I had a cylinder with a little lower I would def do it but is there a easier way then pulling the timing covers to check for tdc?

I wanna try replacing the pcv, cleaning the intercooler and getting a aos to see what happens.

I'm interested in seeing if an aos would fix the issue. I have almost the exact same symptoms with excessive smoke on startup and lots of oil in my intake track. This must have been happening to my 04 wrx for some time because when i first removed the hard black line that attaches to the tmic, it was 75% clogged with gunk. Compression test came out good, and it wasn't the turbo for i replaced that as well. I will be replacing the pvc to see of that helps

Any updates from anyone with this issue? I just bought an 07' STi with both ons and a GrimSpeed AOS and I get blue smoke on a cold start and oil seems to be going somewhere because I bought the car and the dip stick bearly showed any oil. Added 2 quarts and it was a little over full. 2 days later and the dip stick isn't reading any oil again. Doesn't blow smoke any other time other than a cold start and no leaks anywhere. Not trying to highjack the thread but I think my issue may be similar.

just a question: can turbo wrap damage turbo?
I have oil consumption problem too. after rebuild for first 100 km I used 15w40 mineral based oil. after that for up to 800 km I have used 10w40 (there was no oil coonsumption mentioned on the dipstick). after those 800 km I poured there motul Xcess 5w40 and wrapped the turbo (yea, the wrap was the best) and went for a 600km trip. after those 600km I was about 0.6 liter low on dipstick. after this I'm loosing about 0.5l every 1000km. then switched to delvac 15w40

no smoking issues, good compression readings, no blowby, PCV is disabled and crankcase is vented in atmosphere.

just wondering i that's due to overheated dead TD04. yes, there is shaftplay, but I do not know how much shaftplay is too much.
the turbo is not blowing any oil in intercooler. also, I did not notice any oil in hot side....

for information, after turbo wrap I was getting about +10 c more temp reading of oil

now turbo wrap is removed...
I use delvac mx 15w40. even after trackday with 5X 10 minute sessions I got zero consumption. I see that oil consumption is not load/high rev dependent, it depends only on milage. just was experimenting with DD use up to 3000 rpm for 600km, and still consuming oil too much.

jist wondering that's turbo? I'll be happy for it
