I will have some good pics soon. I started taking the motor out of a Baja today with a nasty lower end noise. I also have an Envoy back that we did valve job on a couple of months ago, 9 out of the 14 head bolts broke off in the block.
This time, they found a giant puddle of coolant under it..... topped it off and headed out to Dallas... I started with a waterpump since that threw the belt off and was leaking like crazy. It was bad enough that when you held it sideways, the ball bearings fell out the front. (odd job, it had an electric fan clutch- why not an electric fan? GM works in mysterious ways) Didn't get a pic before it disapeared though- my apologies. As I was topping off the coolant, it starting exploding out of the top of the radiator. Suspecting a blown headgasket, I hooked up my pressure tester to the radiator and started the motor. It pegged the gauge at 30 psi the second it kicked over. I then pulled off the cap to relieve the pressure so I could move it to the back and and work on something else while the customer decided what to do. Once it has parked, I noticed that water was dripping out the side of the motor where the head meets the block. Pics will follow soon... ![]() |

As for my friends car, the engine is toast. He was an idiot and started his car to try and move it (water was getting inside) well cold air intake + high water... You get the picture. He knew he ****ed up after he had turned the key and it started and as he drove it all of a sudden bucked and died. Good news is that he was planning to build the block for this winter and the set up he is going to do so I guess he just gets an early start |

Fresh Meat
![]() Quick story- sold the car a few months ago (I run a small car lot/ repair facility when sales are slow) and it was here this morning when I showed up. I tracked down the keys (I didn't close last night) and went to see why it was here. Hopped in and cranked it over- ran, but with a dead miss. Popped the hood- checked the plug wires to see if they were still in place, - Check. Checked the oil - None on the dipstick. Started looking around for a big leak and saw this- ![]() Looked a little further and then saw this- 2 holes on the same side of the block and it still runs, albeit poorly. Doesn't even sound bad at idle, just feels like it has a misfire. Gotta love toyotas! ![]() EDIT: Customer is mad at us... They bought a 91 camry with 244k miles and didn't keep an eye on the oil level.... Gotta love this business. |

Took my end-links to a shop to press out the old bushings, and press in the new ones. They left the metal sleeves in while trying to press them, and told me they couldnt get the new bushings in.
They did this to the one, and didn't even tell me: ![]() Still used it though. Not nearly as bad as some of the stuff in this thread but still! Last edited by ManualOverAuto; 09-27-2012 at 09:22 PM. |

Sorry, no pictures but a funny story nonetheless.
A good buddy of mine owns a car stereo shop and i was hanging out with him one day when a customer pulls in and says his 'system' keeps shutting down. They open up the hood to check the power wire lead to the amp and see a piece of 12 gauge speaker wire jammed between the + battery post and the main battery cable. They then trace this speaker wire where it was run along the gap between the hood and fender, through the door jam, between the headliner and trim, and finally to some swapmeet special "Hi-Power" amp that was attempting to run 2 15's in parallel. Everytime he would open and close the door the wire would get crushed and either blow a fuse on the amp or pull the wire off the battery. haha |

Had one come in today, I'm a service advisor for sears auto. She comes in, wants to have us put a tire she has in the trunk on her car.
Ok no biggie, go to pull the car into a bay, garbage covered the entire floorboards. I had to move trash so it wasn't messing with the pedals, went to shut the door and it dropped 3 inches while trying to close it. Power steering was non existent(it was a late 90s or 00 lumina) same with the brakes, had to basically stand on the pedal to stop that hunk of junk. And her turn signal lever was broken, always blinked for left turn, lift it and the right blinker is on. Anyways, the tech comes out and shows me the tire she wants put on the car, completely bald and doesn't hold air. I go and tell her, the response I get "oh, so I can't use that tire? It didn't look that bad" no lady you can't. Her inspection is due next month. Hopefully that rolling death trap is off the road soon enough. Scary thing is apparently worse cars have come in. It was bald and the tech still put it on the wheel to find out that it wouldn't hold air?

When you start getting that "growling noise" that changes when you turn left or right... Its usually a good idea to take your car to a mechanic. It much cheaper to replace a wheel bearing when its "going bad" then it is to replace your bearing, axle, caliper, brake pads, rotor, and wheel when the bearing "fails"...
Ford Exploder Sport-Trac, for your consideration! ![]() |

Back when I was a full time tech, I used to have a zippo that had a ford logo on it. People would ask me 'So, your a Ford man?" My reply was always- "they pay my bills"

My friend just had a '70s Rolls Royce show up at his Saab shop out of nowhere. Apparently it's got a misfire and brakes don't work in the slightest. I do not envy him.
