Thumbs down Another broken AC clutch on '08 WRX <50k miles

My AC stopped working, I heard metallic-grinding-spinning sound, and found a broken part on the end of my AC pulley. Searched and found a few threads with the same broken part, but most of them were under warranty. I have a stock 2008 WRX with just under 50k miles.

I'm pretty disappointed that this $26 part can't be replaced, and Subaru makes you buy a whole entire compressor for $600.

I've gotten two different quotes for the repair, and both are saying I need a new compressor which is going to be about a $1000 job after parts, labor and coolant charge/discharge (one dealership, one non-dealer shop).

The piece that broke is the same as this one pictured here:

AC clutch?

Anyone selling a used compressor?? For the price difference, I'll risk the used part breaking again...unless there's a better solution out there that I'm not finding. It seems ridiculous to have to discharge/re-charge the system and replace an otherwise working compressor just for this little part on the end of the pulley that looks fairly easy to replace.

Thanks for your input.

My buddy (Evil Imports on here) just had this happen on his 2009 STi. It seems to be a common problem. His quote for the compressor was like $450 or something. $1000 seems outrageous. He ended up getting it covered under warranty.

Yeah, the 2008 WRX AC compressor is something like 73111FG001 and it costs $463 at myimportparts.com (local subaru dealer for me). Buy it, replace just the pulley/clutch unit and sell the compressor again for $300. Someone will buy it/need it.

Or if you end up replacing the whole unit, just do it yourself and have an AC shop vacuum and charge the system for $200. Either way, it's not hard to beat their stupid $1000+ quote.

Thanks for the input, fellas! Looks like rockauto has one for $100.

The approx $1000 quotes are for:
$600 new OEM compressor
$150 labor
$150 discharge/recharge
$ tax, disposal, whatev...
=
approx $950/1000
