Default Vag com cable from gameadvance

Just wanted post about my experience using the vag com cable, first off let me say that the first cable I got would not work I had tried almost everything going from forum to forum and it would not work reason being the cable I got at first was not a cable that the ftdi drivers would work with I was able to put them on but I got a code 10 would not start garbage even with the tactrix drivers as well this was with windows XP and windows 7. When I tried to get it to work with ecuflash, depending on the drivers installed, it would either say no vehicle interface or it would pop up on the lower right corner 2.0 USB SERIAL, or 1.3 openport and it would lag I mean lag so incase anyone is having this problem make sure to buy a vagcom that has the ftdi processor or ftdi USB to rs232 like I had to. Gameadvance is who I got mine from the first cable I got from someone else, but nonetheless got the new one I got working I had ecuflash 1.42 installed and used those drivers then I had to revert back to 1.31 because I was getting kernel errors. Works flawlessly now, used on an 06 Wrx TR

2005 2.5RS driver checking in.

thanks to this thread the cable is working great after a couple software trial and error sessions. Not bad for about $22 and an evening's time.

- Alpha-Bid VAG-COM cable with "DaRealGMan" wiring mod that involves soldering a wire between pins 11 and 16
- FTDI drivers from the first post
- EcuFlash 1.29A
- ECU definitions from EcuFlash 1.41
- using 16bit Windows XP on a Thinkpad

A few notes:
I had to cut the baud rate on the chosen cable COM port down to 4800
I was originally using EcuFlash 1.41 but it would not recognize the cable. I also tried the most recent EcuFlash which is 1.43 IIRC, but that also would not work. 1.29a was a success.
It was noted somewhere that 1.29a will not accept ECU definitions from later versions. I used defs from my 1.41 installation without issue.

after making these changes I test-flashed and it checked out, so I took the plunge and flashed a new tune without any issues. thanks to those who took the time to explore this new option.

If you are afraid of bricking your ecu, don't fiddle with your car.

That being said, I've been using one for almost 8 months and never had a cable problem.

So i just bought a vag-com cable and got the one with the "bad" pcb. Blue cable with blue housing.

My car has an ecutek tune on it and was wondering if anyone has any info/experience with the common software and an ecutek tune?

My experience so far.

-XP would not recognize the cable and FTDI drivers did NOT work ... i checked the vendor his ebay page and bingo some chinese folder containing the driver and voila it worked.

-Ecuflash , learning view , Ecuexplorer ... none of these work.

-Romraider (latest) works flawlessly. (that means the cable works but whenever i want to read the ROM -> nothing)

I had to use an old ELM OBD-II cable and that trial scantool just to remove a CEL because logging was all i could do.

Now the question: Does my cable need modifying (if even possible) to read the ROM? Or to get any ECU programs working for that matter? Or is ecutek behind all the problems?

So i can log but that's pretty much it. I wan't to learn more but i'm stuck and i'm afraid it's because of the tune.

I know this is my first post on nasioc but i have been lurking on this forum for close to 3 years (2 years ownership) and would be glad to contribute any experience info i have!

I have an 06 STi btw.

Thanks in advance.

TL;DR

that cable will work fine with your 06, any trouble may be due to the ECUtek crap

Yeah sry for the walloftext. So my cable should read te ROM even without the voltage mod's? If that is the case i can indeed assume that any further issue is due to the tune.

As I posted long before. My unmodified "bad style" cable does everything on my 07.

Bought a Vag-Com cable that ended up coming with a WinChipHead chip as was mentioned earlier in this thread. Initially tried the ftdi drivers, no luck. Finally installed the correct drivers for wch. Setup com port at 4800 baud.

Rom Raider Logger works fine so I know the cable is connected and the driver is working. My issue is with Learning View/EcuFlash, etc.

It appears to connect to the ECU for a sec, gets the ecu ID, then I get a timeout error when it's trying to read the FLKC rpm table. (see screenshot for log)

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

(tried, xp, win7, LV 0.6a and 1.0 rc3 to no avail.... EcuFlash versions from 1.29a through current all get "no interface".

Thanks again for any help anyone can offer. (Is it just the wch chip?) Do I need to mod the cable for the 12v jumper or something? *also running through parallels on my mac, just to throw that in.

Just to give a follow-up from my previous post, the same day I bought the cable above (that ended up being the WinChipHead chip) I ordered another one as a safety from dx.com.

It finally came today and thank FSM, it had the FTDI chip.

I was able to open Learning View and see my tables on the first shot.

BTW - both cables look exactly the same from the outside. The blue with the silver cable.

This is the one that worked from dx:
http://dx.com/p/obdii-usb-car-diagno...ble-blue-42823

Be forewarned though, the Free SuperSaver shipping took 27 days to get here.

(And this is the one that did NOT work, except for RomRaider Logger only)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/170896991411...witem=&vxp=mtr

Came in 5 days though because it was in NJ.

Sorry to say, but that one you said that does NOT work.. works for me, Blue corded. At first it just let me log my car, but after researching around the web, I decided to do the power mod(jumping cables) and it will let me log, read, and write my car now. I have a 05 wrx. I just had to use an earlier version of the software to work.

Interesting. What version of learning view are your running ?

Ok what i got so far:

Car: 06 WRX STi
Cable: Blue housing, blue cable and "less favourite/winchip?" PCB unmodified.

Romraider working flawlessly

Ecuflash 1.42 : nothing

Learning view recognizes the ECU (remarkably) but then cuts out .... maybe the ecutek or another problem?

So i get the same error as "Z" here so the FTDI cable should fix my issue but "milocas" has got things working with the winchip cable ... i wanne try his solution before i purchase another cable.

I had no luck, but when i tried to mess with the settings in Device manger, select the port/cable thats connect, change the rate to 4800, and it should work. has for me, should for you.
For ecu flash, try 1.29a

^ I tried all that, different versions of ECU Flash, Rom Raider, different Baud rates... I was going to try jumping the pins with the 12v but I figured I would wait until the second cable got here so I didn't even bother once that worked.

Milocas... just to confirm, your cable has the winChipHead chips? Or does it have the FTDI?

You haven't jumped the pins? There's your issue right there than. You aren't losing anything by trying it. I have the winchip and its working great after jumping.

Just tried ecuflash 1.29a and no luck. Changing the baud rate to 4800 to get learning view to work also didn't work.

I'm going to have to do the voltage mod and see if it that makes any difference. But i'm having trouble finding a pic of my pcd with the mod on it.

This is my cable

And this is the only "mod" pic i found. As you can see it's the FTDI chip and pcb.

does the mod work with any type of PCB? I assume it does because the pinout of the OBD-II port remains the same but i want to make sure either way. @milocas: you have the same PCB as mine AND have the voltage mod as seen in the last pic correct? Just to make sure cause if the cable is ****ed ok i just go and buy the FTDI one but i don't want to **** up my OBD-II port or anything else on the car.

^ yeah the pinout to the obdII connector will be the same, i think it's pin 16 to 11 iirc.

Here are some pics, etc in this thread. (I don't think you need to do the extra pcb mods hopefully) There's a few more posts later in the thread too.

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...9#post35844629

And yeah milocas, I think I will jump the pins just to see if that makes it work.

Dont mind the other wires on the chip.

^ Is that a pic of your cable or is that just from that other thread?

edit: nm, i saw someone else had posted that pic..

The only other question I have, is it necessary to jump 15 & 9 (in addition to 16 & 11)? Or is that only if you do the other mods on the pcb itself, ie separate the k & L lines... etc (and/or does that only apply to 16bit ecu for the 15 & 9)
