Default If using Meth injection.. Is larger TMIC needed?

Car is a 2006 WRX..built motor, 18G-XT, STi TMIC and typical bolt ons, as well as methanol injection.
I was considering ditching the STi TMIC and getting something like a Spearco. They have a group buy for $700, which seems like a good deal since Spearcos have always been on the higher end of the spectrum from what I recall.
But my question is, do I really need a larger top mount intercooler since the car has methanol injection and that will cool the air on its own?

Just trying to see if the potential hp increase is worth the extra cost..

I don't know much about meth injection, but I do know that the Sti tmic can become a horsepower crutch, even on the VF39.

Adding a larger bar and plate style tmic will help to cool down all that hot air much more efficiently than the Sti top mount could ever imagine.

Another option would be the CX racing intercooler off of eBay, at nearly a seventh of the price, the same dimensions and materials, its worth thinking about, to save a few bucks to put elsewhere.

I did a detailed write up of the intercooler in this thread: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...825869&page=32

Sorry I couldn't answer your question about meth injection, but hopefully I may have shown you another viable option for your build.

I dont know if just methanol is enough to cool the stock intercooler. My current setup uses methanol and nitrous to cool it down but you might be okay.

With an 18G-XT and methanol, something with more flow than the STI intercooler would certainly help. The lower pressure drop will give more low and mid-range power, and the meth/water injection will help cool it under boost.

Under regular driving conditions, the 18G-XT is making less heat than the stock turbo would. The STI intercooler is more than likely sufficient unless your water/meth combo is maxed out, and you are still pulling timing under full boost.

Buying the Spearco unit should net you faster spool, better transient response, and a bit more power.

My opinion is you should go front mount. There's a lot more potential for gains. Cooler IAT at the manifold means you can run more boost and timing before detonating.

Why not try different mixes and nozzle size instead of a larger TMIC? The whole point of meth/water injection is the octane bump with chemical intercooling isn't it.

I personally would go with a better TMIC. But that's because a big hunk of aluminum is less likely to fail than a meth kit.

Plain & Simple it's not needed but it is recommended. But if your in a hot area, I'd get a bigger tmic or even a FMIC.

What is all this nay-saying on the sti tmic? It's not bad. In fact, someone did dyne testing between it and the coveted PW setup and the sti one came out on top.

The STI TMIC is one of the most efficient top mounts out there (if not the most) but aftermarket ones like TurboXS, Spearco, etc. definitely have less pressure drop, and higher CFM capacity.

I didn't say anything negative about it.

I made 350whp @ 20psi on a 04 Sti tmic with my 20g-xt on pump 91. My tuner highly recommended a FMIC to make more power.
