I've been through one CV boot after owning a catless WRX since April 2003. Was the downpipe the cause or the time? I don't know but all CV boots go to hell over time, its what they do, so don't obsess over making a shield.

Why don't you want to wrap it? (read- heat kills power -and- heat soak).

Even the stock downpipe and exhaust will kill that cv boot with enough time.

because if any moisture gets trapped in there it can cause it to rust/rot, it can make it heat up uneven, just problems. id wrather leave it alone. also i dont want to take it off the car again

even or uneven of the DP wont do anything.

moisture will burn off far before it can cause any damage.

wrapping it is a GOOD idea, but not for the reasons your buddy told you.
