EJ22 Replacement

ok so I've searched and read all around and haven't really been able to find anything...maybe I'm not good at searching or maybe there's not much support for the ej22 I don't know but here's my question:

I have a 98/99 Impreza Outback Sport with an EJ22 in it. Recently I spun a bearing and I've read that its more cost effective to just replace the engine rather than doing the bearing (which personally I'd rather do anyways). So I'm in the market for a new engine but don't know what will fit in my car.

Now I know there are phase I and phase II engines and they switch over between 98 and 99...so there in lies the problem. I'm not 100% sure which mine is. My title says its a 99 but the badge on the door jam says 98. Which should I go by? Theres a couple of engines on eBay that say "6th digit 4" in the title which I'm guessing is for the VIN number...which my VIN also has 4 for the 6th digit. Is that enough to go off of, or is there another determining factor?

Also, I was just curious on how difficult the replacement would be? I've done swaps in the past but never worked on my Outback like this. I've seen the write up on the removal but not too sure about the whole process...I would think its straightforward but with cars you never know.

I'm also going to have to replace the clutch and flywheel while I'm in there.

Any advice, suggestions, opinions or anything you want to provide or even yell at me or whatever would be appreciated haha. I'm totally lost as of right now and have to try to get this done within a few weeks.

Does your engine have the valve covers of the ej18? Or the valve covers from the 99 2.5 rs ej251?

I'm not sure...how do I tell? I just thought it was an ej22 I had no idea about the valve covers being different...let me know and ill check as soon as I get home

i have not posted my pictures but i just tackled this.. sorta.

i had to remove the engine to get to the oil/separator plate (yes thats what its called!)

i acquired a means to lift the motor

went at it. took me all weekend and a little bit more. buy rubber gloves!

two jacks helped

ps. im 23 and have been working on cars since i was 20. did it all with dads tools.
may i also recommend craigslist.. but careful dont get mugged.
you have a 22E (i think) look on block between alternator and steering pump. they have slightly better performance due to piston coating (less friction) but they are the same. plug and play.

So I'm looking at an 97 automatic impreza outback sport, would the engine out of that work with my 09/98 (door jam month and year) standard impreza outback sport. I don't think the transmissions matter right? Should still bolt up if I'm not mistaken...just making sure the phase 1 to phase 2 thing is all good?

Any ideas would be extremely helpful since I'm supposed to go pick it up Tuesday

Ok well I didn't pick up the other impreza since the person never came through. But there's another engine for sale with transmission for 500 obo. I'm interested in getting it however once again its a phase 1 from a 94-95 impreza and I'm still unsure if it would work with my 98/99 obs...

Any ideas?

I'm just looking for a sure answer before I invest the time and money :/

theres gota be info on here somewhere. the difference that i can think of is one is non interference and the other isnt. this is a mechanical difference that shouldnt make a difference in plug and play

FWIW i just swapped my busted EJ253 in my manual trans car with one from an auto trans. I've no idea about the older phase one phase two stuff, but i can say that it was simple as beans to swap a clutch onto the auto engine. Also, there were some other minor differences, you can always read my thread about it (it's in this sub-forum).

my only concern for you would be that the engine plays well with the ECU. I think a dealer should be able to answer that question.

this was my first ever engine pull and my brother and i found that pulling a subie engine was crazy easy and so was putting it back in. It took us 8 hours total, but some of that time was cleaning, and we also changed the t-belt on the new engine. also there was time lost due to me needing to help out with my 10mo old. Don't fear the mechanical work.

Buy any ol EJ22, swap over your heads and manifolds, reinstall it, done.

I rarely see 22s spin bearings, but I'm in the middle of a complete rebuild on one. Internals (save for piston dish) are the same as every other one I've torn down; 90 up through 99.

Have you researched/considered a JDM ej25? They can be found just about anywhere.
