Yeah, pretty upset about it. It took him 5 years (Build start 3/27/2009) of me waiting to get it back, car payments, insurance payments, registration, being teased/lectured about how long it’s taking by work, friends, and family, etc. then less than 24 hours of getting it back the motor pops not even pushing it hard. The whole experience with him and his shop felt like 5 years of torture and sucked the fun out of this whole thing. Each time someone inquires about my Subaru it's like a punch to the gut. Pretty much taking it to 6,000rpm in 5th gear three times. The third pull it pops before I could shift into 6th. Throughout this time I have driven the car less than 3 months out of those 5 years. Throughout the build I tried helping out, doing research, doing some foot work on parts, etc. Most I got was finger pointed lip service and excuses. Once I had hand tight/loose lug nuts on one pickup, stolen turbo, and my favorite is when he goes out picks out a clutch and buys it, installs it, car sits for about a year or more, clutch can’t handle the power/fails to meet specifications, and he wants me to pay for it since it’s out of manufacture warranty and they won’t refund. I talked too and I’m still friends with a lot of his ex-employees who only confirmed my suspicions about why it took so long. To avoid confusion a lot of the information they provided was while they were working at his shop. I have a lot more information but I just don’t want to get into it and I don’t have the energy to deal with this garbage. At this point I am going to have the motor re-built, thoroughly tested, and sell the car.

Is this another EQ Tuning car? Really bummed to hear this. I just don't hear a lot of good things about EQ.

On the other hand, the only complaints I've heard about local shops are:

GST Motorsports: They don't do builds anymore. I also heard one guy complain about his tune, but my tune has been flawless as have dozens of other people I know.

LIC: They're expensive. That's the only complaint.

RBMS: Never heard a complaint about Mert.

Snail: Some of the best tuning around. Never heard a complaint.

His strong point is his tuning but management, customer service, and builds are where he fails as an owner. His approach to his customers, from my experience, is if an issue comes up he attempts push the problem and/or cost off to the customer. The clutch I mention above is a good example of that and I battled him for about 2-3 months over it. At one point he was telling me it was between me and the company trying to side step it. When the motor popped he pointed to Cosworth saying their rod failed. My car sat for three months and all they did was drop the oil pan, found a fragmented rod, and said it was a failed rod. He then claims he has been calling Cosworth (making it sound like he spent hours, days, and weeks calling) but has no names or contacts. He then slowly started pushing it on to me and says he doesn’t have the time. That’s when I decided I needed to pull it. In his defense, he stepped up his customer service and management for about a month or two near the end but that was ended when my motor popped.

His pricing is definitely high. I remember a few times I noticed this, one I was looking at parts that where proprietary, E85 sensor and display. I see how much they cost MSRP from the manufacture but on my invoice it’s $60 more. I understand markup but that was ridiculous (we ended up not getting it). Another time I purchased an AccessPORT V2 for $540 (shipped, no tax, new). I tell him and he tells me to cancel the order since he can get it from his vendor cheaper. So I cancel it and pay a restocking fee of $35 then look at my invoice and he has it on there for $595 plus tax. Who does that? Again, in his defense he has made right on all of these complaints but it’s the principle of it that pisses me off.

Kelly knows this one well, the header. He tells me Kelly is procrastinating on the headers and dragging his feet but I talked to Kelly directly and he has Kelly doing other small “EQ” parts besides the header. So I spent over a year of this finger pointing confusion going on with him claiming they have been constantly working on my car and my headers. I got so fed up I just went out and bought the Full-Race TS Rotated Header kit. Keep in mind while they waited on the header, the wiring, fuel, etc. still hasn’t been done on the car or even touched. It was like without the header they couldn’t work or touch anything else that needed to be done. When questioned, the same response that they are constantly working on my car. I did random stop in, checks, talking to his employees, etc. and everything he claims they are doing was just lip service.

Who as a shop owner has your car sit for years, after the customer has already paid enough to cover parts and contract work, call them mid build to get more money? I gave him 3/4th of the cash needed for this build and I am being hit up? That was roughly around the time he got the dyno. This whole experience, talking about it now only pisses me off and makes my head spin since he gets to parade numbers while I sit with a fragmented block and nothing to show for it. If he sees this post he will probably come in with some professional canned BS about how there are things out of his control and his shop did everything they could do, and blah blah blah blah blah. If not, then probably a request that this be taken down to prevent any negative posts out there on the web while threatening slander, defamation, etc.

Sorry to hear that. It's similar to mine. I don't like talking about the car that I don't get to drive. It's been down too long so it must be devastating to deal with that result. I hope it works out well

Wow! Can't believe your build took 5 years even though you paid him 3/4 up front?!
Sorry to hear.... Makes me wonder if he caused my first motor to blow during a road tune with him.
Had him do my build a while back... Took longer than I would have liked as well. Luckily I didn't have him "build" my motor.
